The Defender

In the book of Revelation, Satan is called the accuser of our brethren. It makes sense to reason that if Satan is the accuser, and also the adversary of God, then God is the defender. This logic is supported by the Bible, most notably in the Psalms written by David though this theme appears in Psalms written by others, and also is a directive given to us throughout the Bible.

Psalm 20:1
The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee;

God defends us in our times of trouble. When we trust in God, we can be happy as God will defend us, as we are joyful to God.

Psalm 5:11
But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.

Beyond trusting in God, and having God defend us, is a call to action for us. God expects us to defend others as we see the need arise.

Psalm 82:3
Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.

In some translations, the Hebrew word for judge in the following verses from Isaiah is translated as defend.

Isaiah 1:17
Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

Isaiah 1:23
Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.

Isaiah shows that those in authority who should have defended the fatherless and widows ignored their duty. Perhaps this is why in the New Testament Paul mentions to the Corinthians that the saints will judge the world, and when looked at in the context of the verses, the word judge means deciding right from wrong; in other words defending those who need defending.

I Corinthians 6:2-3
Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?

What are the things that pertain to this life that we judge? One of the things we see all the time in things pertaining to this world is how widows are mistreated and the fatherless are oppressed. Those who are afflicted and needy are also easily ignored in this world. It is our place to defend those who have the need to be defended. It was this knowledge that gave David his hope during the brutal times of his life, and gave him reason to write the words of one of the best known Psalms.

Psalm 23:1-6
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

As we walk through the shadowy valleys of matters pertaining to this life, knowing that evil influenced by Satan is all around, we can trust in God knowing that it is God who defends us so that goodness and mercy will follow us through our life.

All verses are from the King James Version.
