Our Goal

The World Cup is under way and every time a goal is made the announcer will shout, "Goal!". The player who made the goal is ecstatic and team mates are jubilant. The other team, especially the goalie, is dejected.

I think the announcers with Mexican TV do the best job of shouting the word goal although American announcers try to copy them. Some games never see a goal made and it is common for only one goal to be made during a game. That's why there is so much excitement about each goal that is made. With all of the excitement of the World Cup and the shouting of the word goal with each goal made, it made me think what is our goal as a Christian.

Philippians 3:14
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Some translations use the word "goal" instead of "mark". The prize we seek is salvation, and just as rare and exciting scoring a goal is at the World Cup, so is scoring our goal of salvation. Just like in soccer, the goal we seek is small when compared to the playing field of life.

Matthew 7:13-14
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

The goal we seek is found only by a few, just like in soccer, only a few goals are made. Even at the highest level of professional play such as at the World Cup.

I Corinthians 9:24
Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.

In sporting events, there is only one champion. One team will win this year's World Cup and be the envy of all other teams. The neat thing about our event, our calling, is those who score win salvation.

Colossians 2:18
Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,

Scoring a goal in soccer is not just hard because of the size of the goal. Many people from the other team are trying to stop the goal from being scored. In our spiritual game, the other team consists of Satan and his demons.

I John 5:4
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Our faith is what will give us victory. Even at the World Cup, a team must believe it can win before it can win. We have the edge in our fight. If we believe and have faith, we will win!

Revelation 22:12
And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

When Jesus returns, we will be given our prize, according to how well we have played the game given to us. And the excitement we will have at that time will far exceed the thrill of scoring a goal at the World Cup.
