Power

Mid-May to mid-June is graduation time for those of us in education. One phrase that educators commonly share with students across many grade levels is that knowledge is power. I have heard few discuss power. If we are given this power, what are we to do?

Power comes in many forms, and one form of power comes in dynamite, invented by Alfred Nobel, who endowed the Nobel Peace Prize. Dynamite can be used for peaceful purposes, such as mining and construction. It also can be used for war by the military. In an unused state, dynamite becomes unstable. So use dynamite for peace, for war, or allow it to become unstable.

In much the same way, knowledge as power can be used to establish peace, to make war, and left unused can become unstable. What does the Bible say about knowledge and power?

Romans 13:1
Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

All power that exists is given by God.

1 Samuel 2:3
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

God uses knowledge to judge our actions. We should not allow our knowledge to give us reason to be proud or arrogant.

Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

We must have proper respect for God and must not despise his wisdom and instruction.

James 1:8
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

A person who has knowledge and does not use it is double minded. One the one hand, they are aware of what they should do. On the other hand, they do not do what they should do. Knowledge that is not used can lead to instability in one's personal life.

Proverbs 24:5
A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

Knowledge can increase our strength. With knowledge we increase our ability to do good or we increase our ability to do evil. If we do not use the knowledge we have, we increase the liklihood of instability.
