The Law of God for Christians

Christians who observe the Sabbath and Holy Days of the Bible are often questioned on their faith in Jesus. Many believe that the law is done away and that the observance of the Sabbath and Holy Days adheres to the sacrifices of the Old Testament. When asked with this question, I like to exam verses from Hebrews.

Hebrews 10:1
For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

In verse 10, Paul shows that we are sanctified by the sacrifice of Jesus. Jesus died once for all. There was not a need to repeat the sacrifice for additional sins as there would have been prior to the sacrifice of Jesus.

Hebrews 10:10
By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

The law is given to foreshadow what God will establish on earth. Shadows project a general shape, but do not provide a detailed information about the body that casts the shadow. Sacrifices of the law do not lead to perfection. Verse three shows that sacrifices do not take away sin. Paul goes on to show that the law is not evil and that God intends to write the law in our heart. The laws mentioned in verse 16 is the same Greek word of verse 1. The law is still a shadow of good things to come. The difference is it is now part of us.

Hebrews 10:16-18
This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

Because God has put his laws into our hearts through the sarifice of Jesus and the gift of the Holy Spirit, God does not remember our sins. Because God is not remembering our sins, there is no need for a sacrificial offering. Everything is predicated on:

1) The sacrifice of Jesus, and
2) Having God put his laws in our hearts and write them in our minds

This is where some of us part company, and for those who believe differently, I wish you peace. I believe that even though God has established grace for us, we cannot allow sin to abound in our life or we cheapen the sacrifice of Jesus.

Romans 6:1-2
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

Paul explains that as Christians we do have grace and that we must be dead to sin. It is like God has reformatted our hard drive, from the operating system of sin to the operating system of love. If a computer jumps back and forth between two operating systems, it is unstable. We are no different. What are we do with the law of God that is written in our minds and put in our heart? Paul explains this in Hebrews.

Hebrews 10:22-27
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

Christians are to gather together to provoke one another to love and good works. Without love and good works, we run the risk of sinning willfully. Love and good works are replacement behaviors for sin, and we are able to love and do good works because the law of God is written in our hearts and minds. The law is not done away! The law is written in our hearts and our minds. The law is to be the very essence of who and what we are and this is manifested by love and good works.

All verses are from the King James Version.
