Unprofitable Servants

There is a common saying that you can't take it with you. Once we are dead, material possessions have no value for us. If we die a rich person, we may have more written about us, have a bigger tombstone, and be remembered longer. People with more modest means have less said and remembered about them. We are all remembered by God who will resurrect us. Perhaps it was this knowledge that inspired Ecclesiastes 9:10.

Ecclesiastes 9:10
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

Whatever we do, we need to do our best. One's best will vary depending upon day to day circumstances. If one day you are healthy and well rested, given equal determination, you are more likely to do better on that day than on a day when you are fighting the flu and were up all night.

However we find ourselves, we need to do our best. We have to go over and beyond what is expected of us or to Jesus we are unprofitable servants. Those who seek only obedience to the Word of God are unprofitable servants. Jesus expects more of us. Notice Luke 17:10.

Luke 17:10
So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

As we seek to do our best and go over and beyond what is expected of us, we must live our life in faith towards God. We have to know that when we ask God to increase our gifts, he will increase our gifts.

James 1:5-8
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

When at work, at play, in the home, or away we need to do our best. We have to seek ways to go over and beyond. And when we need God's help to grow, we have to ask for that help in faith!
