What Sets Us Apart?
There was one sign provided to the disciples that would establish their discipleship for all that would see. For those of us who are first century apostolic Christians, in our many scattered congregations, knowing what this sign was can help us relate to each other and remove doubt from others that we are Christians. In the Old Testament, the Sabbath was a sign that set apart Israel, and as first century apostolic Christians, we observe the Sabbath.
Exodus 31:16-17
Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever:
for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
Because the Sabbath is commonly associated with Judaism, we are often mistaken by others for being Jewish. So the question us what can we do so others can see we are the disciples of Christ?
John 13:34-35
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
Christian love, as we are led by the Holy Spirit is what shows others we are Christ's. Without this, others will question our faith. Love alone does not set us apart as the children of God.
Romans 8:14
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
So what is it that sets us apart? The Holy Spirit sets us apart for God as we are led by the Holy Spirit and our love for each other sets us apart to man. Without both, God cannot use us as tools to bring others to him. Even though our congregations are scattered, and we may be suspicious of each other, we through faith must show love each other as children of God so that God can use us to call more children to him.
All verses are from the King James Version.
