Armageddon
October 1, 2011
The fall holy days point towards the return of Jesus and the establishment of the Kingdom of God. The Bible shares with us that the end time of this world will be a time of great tribulation that will culminate in a battle that is called Armageddon. Before this battle is fought, this world will see many other evils and natural disasters. In some ways, the world will be continuing as normal, and may appear to be going through a more intense time in its history. For those who are called and respond to their calling, they will see these events in the light of Bible prophecy. The elect, as called by the Bible will endure to the end, and will not be misled by the beast and false prophet that will be on the seen during this time. Before the end arrives, many things have to happen, and these events are detailed in Matthew 24.
Matthew 24:1-5
And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to
him for to shew him the buildings of the temple.
And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily
I say unto you, There shall not be
left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown
down.
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the
disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these
things be? and what shall be the sign
of thy
coming, and of the end of the world? And
Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive
you.
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am
Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye
shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled:
for all these
things must come
to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise
against nation, and
kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences,
and earthquakes,
in divers places. All these are
the beginning of sorrows. Then shall
they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall
be hated
of all nations for my name's sake. And
then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall
hate one
another. And many false prophets shall
rise, and shall deceive many. And
because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax
cold.
But he that shall endure unto the end, the
same shall be saved. And this gospel of
the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all
nations;
and then shall the end come. When ye
therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel
the
prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
Then let
them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on
the
housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let
him
which is in the field return back to take his clothes. And
woe unto them that are with child, and to
them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not
in the
winter, neither on the sabbath day: For then shall be great
tribulation, such
as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever
shall be. And except those days should be shortened,
there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days
shall be
shortened. Then if any man shall say
unto you, Lo, here is Christ,
or there; believe it
not.
For there shall arise false Christs, and
false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that,
if it
were
possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have
told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you,
Behold,
he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the
secret chambers;
believe it
not.
For as the
lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so
shall also
the coming of the Son of man be. For
wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered
together.
Immediately after the tribulation of those days
shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and
the stars
shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
And then
shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all
the
tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in
the
clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they
shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of
heaven to
the other. Now learn a parable of the
fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye
know that
summer is nigh: So
likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know
that it is near, even at the
doors.
Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these
things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth
shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of
that day and hour knoweth no man,
no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the
days of Noe were, so shall
also the coming of the Son of man be. For
as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and
drinking,
marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into
the ark,
And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall
also the
coming of the Son of man be. Then shall
two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other
left.
Two women
shall be grinding
at the
mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch
therefore: for ye know not what hour
your Lord doth come. But know this, that
if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would
come, he
would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken
up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an
hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler
over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that
servant, whom his lord
when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily
I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his
goods.
But and if that evil servant shall say in his
heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his
fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that
servant
shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in
an hour that he
is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his
portion
with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Jesus warns us that during the end time many will claim to represent him, but will deceive many. This is why Christians need to read the Bible for themselves. The end of time will be a time of wars and civil unrest, food shortages, disease outbreaks, and natural disasters throughout the world. Because of the intensity of the time, the natural affection of many will grow cold. Society will evolve into a sterile environment where there is no natural care for each other. Only those who endure to the end will be saved. For those who believe they are saved now, this verse contraindicates this belief. When God intervenes, he does so for those who are called who endure to the end, the elect. He saves them from the Great Tribulation, and warns that only some will be saved, and shows that those who are saved are those who are doing what they need to be doing upon his return. Those who are not doing what needs to be done, will be considered to be less than a hypocrite.
In the Old Testament, the Book of Daniel provides concise information regarding the end of time leading up to Armageddon. The Kings of the North and South are introduced by Daniel. Jesus referenced Daniel in the Olivet Prophecy of Matthew 24. Another concept introduced by Daniel is what Jesus called the Great Tribulation.
Daniel
12:1-13
And
at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth
for the
children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as
never was
since there was a nation to that
same time: and at that time thy
people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the
book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of
the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame
everlasting contempt. And they that be
wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn
many to
righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, to
the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be
increased. Then I Daniel looked, and,
behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the
river,
and the other on that side of the bank of the river. And said to
the man clothed in
linen, which was upon the
waters of the river, How long shall it
be
to the
end of these wonders?
And I
heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the
waters of the river,
when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware
by him
that liveth for ever that it shall be for a
time, times, and an half;
and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy
people,
all these things shall be
finished.
And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall
be
the end of these things?
And
he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up
and sealed till
the time of the end. Many shall be
purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly:
and none
of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall
understand.
And from the time that the daily
sacrifice
shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there
shall be a
thousand two hundred and ninety days. Blessed is he that
waiteth, and cometh
to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. But
go thou thy way till the end be:
for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.
The Book of Revelation records most of end-time prophecy. It is written in very colorful and sometimes hard-to-follow language. It is within the pages of this book that the beast, false prophet and the mysterious 666 are introduced. But it is also in the pages of this book that the Bible shows that the battle at Armageddon will occur. This battle marks the change in the government of this world. Prior to this battle, man is governing the world. After the battle, God through Jesus is governing this world.
Revelation 16:1-12
And
I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go
your
ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the
earth.
And the first went, and poured out his vial
upon the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men
which
had the mark of the beast, and upon them
which worshipped his image. And the second angel poured out
his vial upon
the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and
every living soul
died in the sea. And the third angel
poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they
became
blood. And I heard the angel of the
waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt
be,
because thou hast judged thus. For they
have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them
blood to
drink; for they are worthy. And I heard
another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and
righteous are
thy judgments. And the fourth angel
poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to
scorch men
with fire. And men were scorched with
great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these
plagues: and they repented not to give him glory. And the
fifth angel poured out his vial upon
the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness; and they
gnawed
their tongues for pain, And blasphemed the God of heaven because of
their pains
and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. And the
sixth angel poured out his vial upon
the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the
way of
the kings of the east might be prepared.
And
I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of
the mouth of the
dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the
false
prophet. For they are the spirits of
devils, working miracles, which go
forth unto the kings of the earth and
of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of
God
Almighty. Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that
watcheth, and
keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his
shame.
And he gathered them together into a place
called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.
After battles that result in a change in government, it is common practiv\ce among men to have war crime trials. And this is a principle that directly ties into the next Holy Day, the Day of Atonenment.
