Does God Exist?
March 12, 2011

The question of the existence of God is one that can be debated by the skeptics from any number of angles to serve their several agendas. For every debate about the existence of God, there are several theological proofs given of the existence of God. Those who do not believe that God exists are cut off from him at this moment in time. They will not be the last, nor were they the first. Adam and Eve were the first to be cut off from God in the Garden of Eden after eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The reason given for their ouster from the Garden of Eden can give us reason for reflection today, and I believe is a simple first proof that can be given for the existence of God. Let’s review the story from Genesis three.

Genesis 3:1-22
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living. Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them. And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Good and evil are rooted in spiritual ideals.  In the absence of God, there is no good and there is no evil.  The verses from Genesis three show that concepts such as good and evil stem from God and opposition to God. These verses also show that eternal life stem from God and appear to be an option given to Adam and Eve. Because we cannot comprehend a world without us beyond purely intellectual terms, Adam and Eve disregarded the importance of the tree of life. They had sufficient intellectual capacity to want to know the inside scoop on God, and this is why the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was so tempting. Because we live in a world that identifies with the concepts of good and evil, the world acknowledges the existence of God through this alone. The atheist who believes in good and evil acknowledges God’s existence. Sadly, many will ignore this as a proof of God’s existence, being puffed up on knowledge. For these people, we should have mercy, as God has had mercy on us.

Romans 11:25-33
For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers’ sakes. For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all. O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

Because all laws stem from the concepts of good and evil, the fact that we have an organized society based on laws, is yet another proof of the existence of God. There is one lawgiver, and all laws stem from him

James 4:12
There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

So in a world that increasingly denying the existence of God by thought and/or by deed, God will have to take extraordinary measures to prove he exists, and in the end, God will prove this. For those who read the Bible and consider the great tribulation to come, this is often seen as a punishment for sin. This will also be a tool that God will use to prove his existence. The great tribulation will be a time when concepts of good and evil will be confused and there will much duress on the people. The great tribulation will be a time when the laws of an organized society will be disrupted by war, natural disasters, famine, and disease. As we live in a world that increasingly disbelieves in the existence of God and we encounter this increasing mindset, we must have mercy on these people as God once had mercy on us. Perhaps it might be through our deeds and thoughts that the existence of God will be brought to the masses so they can obtain mercy from God.

All verses are from the King James Version.
