The Feast of Trumpets -- Return from Exile
September 29, 2011
Throughout the history of mankind, governments have come and gone. For somegovernments in times of war, these have been forced into exile. During the Second World War, the aggression of the Nazis forced many governments to flee. In the place of the government was installed a puppet government. In recent history, one only needs to recall Vichy France. After Nazis defeated the French and the French government fled, the Nazis allowed Vichy France to function as a government subject to limitations imposed by the Nazis. There soon was spirited debate on the legitimacy of the Vichy government. Led by Marshal Philippe Pétain, the Vichy government was opposed by the Free French Forces, led by General Charles de Gaulle in exile. During most of the war, Vichy France was recognized by Allied governments as the legitimate government of France. Yet as the war progressed and it became easy to see that the Vichy government would fully support Nazi war efforts, the position of the Allied governments changed. While the Vichy government claimed to be the legitimate government of France, the French Free Forces considered the Vichy government to be nothing more than traitors and collaborators with the enemy. The French Free Forces were able to recruit a number of resistance fighters who also believed the Vichy government was illegitimate. Towards the end of the war, as the French Free Forces regained control of France with the Allied invasion, the Vichy government was forced to flee into exile. After the war, some of the leaders within the Vichy government were executed for treason. Others, including Marshal Philippe Pétain were given a life sentence. In the end, during a time of war when there is a government in power and at the same time a government in exile, the legitimacy of illegitimacy of a government is determined by victory in the war. The government on the winning side will be deemed legitimate, and the government on the losing side will be deemed illegitimate. The Feast of Trumpets commemorates a future moment in time when God's government in exile will return to Earth to establish the legitimate government, and as with any change of government, change of government only occurs with friction and conflict. Even during a peaceful transfer of power through a democratic process, the election process is full of conflict as political candidates jockey for position to be elected. In the most dramatic cases, change of government occurs as the result of war. In ancient Israel, the trumpet was used to signal action and often associated with war. The first use of the trumpet was to gather the children ot Israel to hear God.
Exodus
19:9-25
And
the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that
the
people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee forever. And Moses told the words
of the people unto
the LORD. And the
LORD said unto Moses,
Go unto the people, and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them
wash
their clothes, And be ready against the third day: for the third day
the LORD
will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. And thou shalt set bounds
unto the people
round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye
go not up
into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount
shall
be surely put to death: There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall
surely be
stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or
man, it shall not live:
when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount. And Moses went down from
the mount unto the
people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes. And he said unto the
people, Be ready against
the third day: come not at your wives. And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that
there were
thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the
voice of the
trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was
in the camp
trembled. And Moses
brought forth the
people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether
part of
the mount. And
mount Sinai was
altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and
the
smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount
quaked
greatly. And when
the voice of the
trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God
answered him by a voice. And
the LORD
came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD
called Moses up
to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people,
lest they
break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. And let the priests also,
which come near to
the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon them. And Moses said unto the
LORD, The people
cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, saying, Set
bounds about
the mount, and sanctify it. And
the LORD
said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and
Aaron
with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come
up unto
the LORD, lest he break forth upon them.So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them.
This immediately preceded the giving of the Ten Commandments. All governments have laws, as does the Kingdom of God. The children of Israel were returning from exile to establish the legitimate government in the land given to them by God, and the children of Israel were in need of laws. After living for so long in exile, controlled by a foreign government, the children of Israel needed these laws to remember who they were and their relationship with God. The trumpet was used as the children of Israel liberated cities within territory that God intended for their possession.
Joshua
6:1-20
Now Jericho was straitly shut up because of the children of Israel: none
went out, and none came in. And
the LORD
said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand Jericho, and the
king
thereof, and the mighty men of valour. And ye shall compass the city, all ye
men of war, and go
round about the city once. Thus
shalt
thou do six days. And
seven priests
shall bear before the ark seven trumpets of rams' horns: and the
seventh day ye
shall compass the city seven times, and the priests shall blow with the
trumpets. And it
shall come to pass,
that when they make a long blast with the ram's
horn, and when ye
hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great
shout;
and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall
ascend up
every man straight before him. And
Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said unto them, Take up
the ark
of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams'
horns
before the ark of the LORD. And
he said
unto the people, Pass on, and compass the city, and let him that is
armed pass
on before the ark of the LORD. And
it
came to pass, when Joshua had spoken unto the people, that the seven
priests
bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns passed on before the LORD,
and blew
with the trumpets: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD followed
them. And the armed
men went before the priests
that blew with the trumpets, and the rereward came after the ark, the
priests going on, and blowing with the trumpets. And Joshua had commanded
the people, saying,
Ye shall not shout, nor make any noise with your voice, neither shall any
word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I bid you shout; then
shall ye
shout.So the ark
of the LORD compassed
the city, going about it once: and they came into
the camp, and lodged
in the camp. And
Joshua rose early in
the morning, and the priests took up the ark of the LORD. And seven priests bearing
seven trumpets of
rams' horns before the ark of the LORD went on continually, and blew
with the
trumpets: and the armed men went before them; but the rereward came
after the
ark of the LORD, the priests going on, and blowing
with the trumpets. And
the second day they compassed the city once,
and returned into the camp: so they did six days. And it came to pass on the seventh day, that
they rose early about the dawning of the day, and compassed the city
after the
same manner seven times: only on that day they compassed the city seven
times. And it came
to pass at the seventh time, when
the priests blew with the trumpets, Joshua said unto the people, Shout;
for the
LORD hath given you the city. And
the
city shall be accursed, even it, and all that are
therein, to the
LORD: only Rahab the harlot shall live, she and all that are
with her in
the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent. And ye, in any wise keep yourselves
from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves
accursed, when ye take
of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble
it. But all the
silver, and gold, and vessels of
brass and iron, are consecrated unto the LORD: they
shall come into the
treasury of the LORD.So
the people
shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets:
and it came to pass,
when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted
with a
great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up
into the
city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
The trumpet is used as a warning in prophecy. Christians are reminded that if we do not heed the warning of the trumpet we are responsible for what happens to us, even when the trumpet is used to signify impending death. The trumpet is used as a warning to Christians to remember to live a life free of sin.
Isaiah 58:1-14
Cry
aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people
their
transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they
seek me daily, and
delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and
forsook not
the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice;
they take
delight in approaching to God. Wherefore
have we fasted, and
thou seest not? wherefore
have we
afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in
the day of your
fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours. Behold, ye
fast for strife
and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast
as ye
do this day, to
make your voice to be heard on
high. Is it such a fast that
I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it
to bow down
his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under
him? wilt
thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD? Is
not this
the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo
the
heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break
every yoke? Is
it
not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring
the poor that
are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover
him; and
that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall
thy light break
forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and
thy
righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy
rereward. Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer;
thou shalt cry, and
he shall say, Here I am.
If thou take
away from the midst of thee the
yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; And if
thou
draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then
shall thy
light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the
noonday: And the
LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and
make
fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a
spring of
water, whose waters fail not. And they
that shall be
of thee shall build
the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many
generations;
and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of
paths to
dwell in. If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from
doing thy
pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of
the LORD,
honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding
thine
own pleasure, nor speaking thine own
words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD;
and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and
feed thee
with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath
spoken it.
Ezekiel 33:1-9
Again
the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, speak to the
children of
thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if
the
people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their
watchman:
If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and
warn
the people; Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh
not
warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon
his own
head. He heard the sound of the trumpet,
and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he
that taketh warning shall deliver his
soul. But if the watchman see the sword
come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the
sword
come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his
iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's
hand. So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a
watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word
at my
mouth, and warn them from me. When I say
unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not
speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his
iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his
way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in
his
iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
Trumpets are used to signify the change from the world we know today to the world that will come through the establishment of the Kingdom of God upon the return of Jesus.
Revelation 8:1-13
And
when he had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about
the
space of half an hour. And
I saw the
seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven
trumpets. And
another angel came and stood at the
altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much
incense, that
he should offer it with the
prayers of all saints
upon the golden altar
which was before the throne. And
the
smoke of the incense, which came with the
prayers
of the saints,
ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.
And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of
the altar, and
cast it into the
earth: and there were voices, and
thunderings, and lightnings,
and an earthquake. And
the seven angels
which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
The first angel sounded,
and there followed
hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth:
and the
third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt
up.
And the second angel
sounded, and as it were
a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third
part of
the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in
the
sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were
destroyed.
And the third angel
sounded, and there fell a
great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the
third
part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters; And the name of
the star
is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood;
and many
men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.
And the fourth angel sounded, and the third
part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the
third part
of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day
shone not
for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst
of heaven,
saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth
by
reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which
are yet to
sound!
The last enemy that will be defeated is death itself, and in this final battle, a trumpet will also sound. Paul shows that Christians will be resurrected at the sound of the final trumpet.
I Corinthians 15:51-58
Behold,
I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be
changed, In a
moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet
shall
sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be
changed. For this
corruptible must put on
incorruption, and this mortal must put on
immortality.So
when this corruptible shall have put on
incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall
be
brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in
victory.O death,
where is thy sting?O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is
sin; and the
strength of sin is the law. But thanks
be to God, which
giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye
stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,
forasmuch as ye
know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
The Feast of Trumpets is a celebration of this future moment in time when the governments of this world will be replaced with the government of God, through the Kingdom of God. Throughout history, the trumpet was used to signify a battle, to sound an alarm, and to gather people together. So it will be. Soon, death itself will be swallowed up in victory, and we will be victorious in the final battle. The legitimate government will be installed, and peace will finally come to this planet.
