Mountain of the Lord
June 25, 2011
Throughout the world are many notable mountains. Mt. Everest, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. McKinley, and the Matterhorn are just a few of the more notable mountains. The ten commandments were given to Moses on Mount Horeb, and in Jerusalem is the Mount of Olives. The Bible makes mention of mountains and the role of mountains in prophecy. Mount Sinai was used as an allegory in the Bible for a type of one the two covenants made with mankind.
Galatians 4:22-26
For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.
Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
Jerusalem, the new Jerusalem that Galatians refers to is above all other mountains. The prophet Isaiah spoke of the mountain of the Lord and even he alluded to the idea that Jerusalem, a new Jersualem would be the mountain of the Lord.
Isaiah 2:2-3
And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORDS house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Other prophets recorded similar thoughts. Micah adds to the idea of New Jerusalem being the Mountain of the Lord that peace will flow from New Jerusalem, unlike the violence that plagues the middle east and many parts of the world today.
Micah 4:2-3
And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Zechariah adds to our understanding by showing that this New Jerusalem will be a city where children can safely play in the streets, and where the elderly will be safe, that the mountain of the Lord will be established in this New Jersualem.
Zechariah 8:3-8
Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age.
And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof. Thus saith the LORD of hosts;
If it be marvellous in the eyes of the remnant of this people in these days, should it also be marvellous in mine eyes? saith the LORD of hosts.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country;
And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness.
The mountain of the Lord may indeed be a place where the elderly and children can safely live. But it is also a spiritual destination for us. The mountain of the lord we must come to is not a physical mountain. It is not one that is physically touched or one that can burn in a fire. It is one that is embodied and found in the new Jerusalem.
Hebrews 12:18-24
For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
(For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
The Book of Revelation shows that this New Jerusalem will at a future time be brought to earth. When this occurs, all enemies will have been defeated, even death. There will be no more sorrow, nor will there be pain as the former things are done away.
Revelation 21:1-7
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new.
And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.
So as we journey and see mountains, we can reflect on the mountain of the Lord and the New Jerusalem. As we overcome in our life we establish our right of inheritance, and our place in the mountain of the Lord and the New Jerusalem.
All verses are from the King James Version.
