The Sabbath
April 9, 2011
I observe the Sabbath on Saturday as a Christian because I believe it is Biblically correct to do so. The Sabbath is the first religious symbol given to mankind as a period of rest during creation week.
Genesis 2:1-3
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
The Sabbath is listed as the first of the religious holidays, or holy days of the Bible.
Leviticus 23:1-3
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.
Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.
Through the course of history, practices surrounding the keeping of the Sabbath have added unnecessary burdens to believers. Even Jesus was questioned on how he and his disciples kept the Sabbath.
Matthew 12:1-13
At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.
But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him; How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.
And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue: And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.
And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep?
Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand.
And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.
Jesus showed that the Sabbath shouldn't prevent a person from eating, nor should the Sabbath prevent us from doing good for others. My full thoughts on the Sabbath can be found on the main page, and the Sabbath is a time for me to more deeply collect my thoughts and reflect on what information the Bible provides on given topics. As a review, the Sabbath was a period of rest after God's creation week, and made holy at that time. The Sabbath is the first of the Holy Days, and these are just around the corner. Many have oppressive views of the Sabbath, and Jesus fought these views without ignoring the command to not work.
All verses are from the King James Version.
