The Two Witnesses
May 14, 2011

After what seems like a long time, a person despised by a good portion of humanity has been killed. News media reports shows people celebrating in the streets. The death of this person has caused sorrow to momentarily go away, and for a moment, the world seems to be unified with its resolve. While recent events may cause some to think this describes the reaction in the United States to the death of Osama Bin Laden, this could equally describe the death of one of the two witnesses. For those unfamiliar with the two witnesses, one only needs to look at Revelation 11.

Revelation 11:1-10
And there was given me a reed like unto a rod: and the angel stood, saying, Rise, and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein. But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months. And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.

The two witnesses seem to not only be God's servants, they have God's protection and seem to use the power of God to defend themselves. The fire that proceeds out of their mouths could be literal fire, or these two individuals could be so verbally skilled that anyone who challenges them will be consumed by the words of these two individuals. Anyone who seeks to do them harm, will be killed, however they seek to harm either of the two witnesses. They are given the Holy Spirit to such a degree that they seemingly can direct upon the earth the plagues of Egypt, and can cause drought. In the end, though it will be a man that kills them, they are killed through the power of the beast. It is then that the world will rejoice, make merry, and send gifts. Going back to Osama Bin Laden, one can understand the American reaction to his death, but the reaction of the world to the death of the two witnesses causes an even larger reaction. To me, this means the end time will be a place without Christianity. That which is Christian, including the two witnesses will be hated. In order for this to happen, Christianity has to disappear or morph into something that never was intended. By this time, anything that calls itself Christian as believed by the masses is not Christian. By this time, religion will be a form of self-aggrandizement. The self will be worshipped and the purpose of God and our Lord in the eyes of the masses will be to worship the self. The message given by the two witnesses will be one that is Biblically correct. Based on the reaction recorded by the world, what is Biblically correct will be by this time politically incorrect. The question each of us needs to ask is where do I stand? Will we stand with God? Will we stand with the world?
