Where are the Leaders?
April 25, 2011

It seems like whenever a crisis arises, citizens look to their leaders for solutions to the crisis. In today's world, across many continents and in many nations, it seems like the citizens are frustrated by the lack of leadership. What does the Bible have to say about a lack of leadership and what might it mean for us? How does this tie in to the Holy Days of God, and the Days of Unleavened Bread? Leadership is a blessing mentioned in the chapter on blessings and cursings found in Deuteronomy.

Deuteronomy 28:13
And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them:

Conversely, a lack of leadership is a cursing mentioned in the very same chapter.

Deuteronomy 28:44
He shall lend to thee, and thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail.

Some look at this chapter as proof that God is mean and vindictive. I believe that the blessings and cursings are the result mostly of natural consequences, whether good or bad, of the human condition, and as Creator, God fully understands the human condition with all of the natural consequences. People who obey God are more likely to understand when a decent person is leading them. Because they see their leader as decent, they are more likely to support their leader, and as a result the leader will be more successful in leading the people. Conversely, when people do not obey God, they are less likely to understand when a decent person is leading them, and may confuse evil for good as these concepts are not clear in their own minds. As result, the leaders they are likely to support will similarly be confused about good and evil, and this will have negative consequences on the nation as a whole. Such a leader may be more interested in his or her agenda, rather than doing what is best for the nation. A righteous leader must lead in obedience to God and with a great deal of love and compassion, and an easy everyday example given for us to understand in the Bible is the leadership role of husband.

Ephesians 5:23-25
For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

When both husband and wife are obeying God, a solid marriage is a natural good consequence. When either party starts to abandon God, and the stability of the marriage is eroded as selfish interests take the place of what is best for the marriage. Leaders need to obey God and they need to be willing to serve through love to meet the needs of the citizens. Sometimes leadership is needed on a lesser scale. Another example of leadership we can relate to is the manager, administrator, director, or supervisor at work.

Colossians 3:22-4:2
Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven. Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

Those who are obedient to God will be obedient at work, knowing that if we cannot obey people we see everyday, that God would have every reason to doubt our sincerity in obeying him. Those is leadership positions at work have to give what is just and equal to those who work for them, because God is just and equal. When we are at work and the work environment is not just and equal, it is because the employee, the supervisor, or both are not led by God's spirit. A just and equitable work environment is a natural good consequence for obedience to God's law. Conversely, when either or both parties are not obeying God, justice and equity are tossed out the window.

So what happens to the person who obeys God ninety-nine percent of the time? There still is that one percent when they are not obedient to God, and that one percent may be sufficient enough to begin the cascading effects of the natural bad consequences of the human condition.

So where are the leaders today? They are hard to find because our world is in so much trouble. We live in a world where good is confused with evil, and evil is confused with good. Many in leadership positions are confusing good and evil as citizens are confusing good and evil. The result is the world we see. There is a better way that will one day be established here on this planet. In the end, good will prevail as God will prevail.

Revelation 21:3-4
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

The law of God is sadly seen by many to be harsh and cruel. It is based on the character of God with a divine understanding of the human condition, and the natural consequences of the human condition. In the end, leadership prevails as God prevails. Good triumphs over evil. The Holy Days, including the Days of Unleavened Bread, celebrate the triumph of good over evil. All that is bad is done away.
