Winter Storms and Global Warming
February 12, 2011
El Paso recently saw temperatures drop to two degrees Fahrenheit, and some surrounding areas had temperatures drop below zero degrees Fahrenheit. This made me wonder where was global warming. Without getting into the politics of global warming, the arguments supporting global warming remind me of a debate recorded in the Book of Job between God and Job.
Job 38:1-14
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it, And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors, And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place; That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
With all of our knowledge, what man is reluctant to acknowledge is the knowledge we do not have. Because man is narcissistic, we do not commonly perceive there is knowledge out there awaiting us. This is hardest for those who are highly educated and is highlighted by the thought process of the Laodiceans.
Revelation 3:14-18
And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
The winter of 2011 will be over in about five weeks and it is already one for the record books. In my hometown of El Paso not only did we see record low temperatures, but we saw thousands of frozen pipes, rolling blackouts, and water shortages. To the east in north Texas hosting the Super Bowl became a challenge when ice and snow storms gripped the area. To the north in New Mexico, natural gas service was disrupted leaving thousands in the cold on the coldest days in decades. On the other side of the world, a typhoon more powerful than Katrina slammed into Australia after weeks of torrential flooding. Events like these prompt us to ask what is up with our weather? And for most, who do not know God or his Word, they jump to the conclusion of global warming. As a result, alternative fuels dependent on sugar cane, corn, and vegetable oils are driving the price of food much higher than inflation, reminding me of the four horsemen from Revelation.
Revelation 6:5-6
And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see.
And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand.
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine.
So as man tries to understand our planet in the absence of knowledge of the Creator, we limit our ability to manage the planet. We may be better to humble ourselves before God and come to the conclusion that Job came to.
Job 42:1-6
Then Job answered the LORD, and said, I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.
Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.
Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.
I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.
Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.
