False Accusations
December 15,
2012
I've shared before that I am a special education teacher, and in my home town of El Paso, Texas, there is a huge public corruption scandal involving public education. Superintendents, assistant superintendents, principals, counselors and others have lost their job. An entire school board had its power stripped by the Texas Education Commissioner. Long before the recent turn of events, people complained to a State Senator who then accused the district in question of wrong doing, and at the time the experts thought the accusations were baseless. These have since turned out to be true, and for me it is somewhat depressing because I don't think anyone gets into education to deny children access to an education. Although the accusations in the public corruption scandal in El Paso have been substantiated, not all accusations are based on truth, and false accusations are one of the challenges faced in life as it is a normal part of the human condition. False accusations can make us feel angry, bitter, resentful, scared, and leave us worse off than when we started. We'll find out that even some in the Bible faced false accusations and we will learn more about what God says regarding this topic.
Revelation
12:9-11
And
the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan,
which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels
were cast out with him. And I heard a
loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the
kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our
brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the
Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto
the death.
False accusations begin with Satan and involve an element of deception. Maybe only part of the story is told, and maybe a purposeful lie is inserted. Sometimes a known fear is played. We know that Satan is the accuser of the brethren and that one day he will be cast down, because of the sacrifice of Jesus, the teachings of the Bible and commitment to faith. Overcoming any false accusation can use these same elements. In life certain sacrifices have been made for or by us to get to where we are, and if we have been mindful of where we are in life we should be able to articulate why and how we got there, and as long as we are willing to outlast those who hurl false accusations, we will be able to stay true to who we are.
John
8:1-11
Jesus
went unto the mount of Olives. And early
in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him;
and he sat down, and taught them. And
the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when
they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken
in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses
in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might
have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped
down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard
them not. So when they continued
asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin
among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the
ground. And they which heard it,
being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning
at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the
woman standing in the midst. When Jesus
had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman,
where are those thine accusers? hath no
man condemned thee? She said, No man,
Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither
do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
In the passage from the Gospel of John, an accusation was made against a women allegedly caught in the act of adultery, and those who brought the accusation were not really concerned about the result of that situation because all they were trying to do was use that situation to bring an accusation against Jesus. Jesus answered with the skill of a masterful politician. He turned an accusation of an act of adultery designed to accuse him of not following the Law of Moses into a self-accusation by each accuser's conscience that ended with no accusation being made. Jesus knew that with the act of accusation came a desire to condemn, and as Lord and Savior, Jesus knew that only God can condemn, even though Satan and those influenced by Satan really want that power.
Proverbs
12:2
A
good man obtaineth favour of the LORD: but a man of wicked devices will
he condemn.
In the end, if we are a good person, God will show us favor, and the challenges we face with false accusations will fade away. With this mindset we are more likely to show mercy to others and less likely to condemn. The more we understand that false accusations are made and that one day we will be the target of these, and the more we understand that God will favor us during this difficult time, the easier it will be for us work our way through false accusations so that we mightcelebrate what is good, embrace what is good, and do what is good.
