Volcanoes
July 7, 2012
My family's recent travels to the northwest have given us incredible views of volcanoes. I remember back in 1980 when Mt. St. Helens rumbled to life and then blew its top. Trees were laid waste, lakes became dead, and anyone near the volcano was killed. At the time, my dad was stationed in Augsburg, Germany with the United States Army and we were preparing for a return to CONUS, the continental United States, and to dad's next duty station, Ft. Bliss, in El Paso, Texas, my hometown. What we immediately saw in Germany after the eruption of Mt. St. Helens was a prolonged winter. Summer never came through the time we left in early July, and when we arrived in the states, summer was in overdrive, which made the drive in the Toyota Corolla station wagon an adventure as it was bought in San Francisco without the need for air conditioning. The drive from the east coast to El Paso involved many says of getting up really early, and pulling off the road shortly after noon once we found a motel willing to take us during the early afternoon. Eventually, we made it to El Paso, and that trip during the heat of the summer of 1980 reminds me of verses found in the Bible that show other future natural disasters prophesied to happen.
Matthew 24:1-9
And Jesus
went out, and departed from the temple:
and his disciples came to him for to
shew him the buildings of the
temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye
not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left
here one
stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. And as he
sat upon the mount of Olives, the
disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these
things be?
and what shall be the sign
of thy coming, and of the end of the
world? And Jesus answered and said unto
them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come
in my name, saying, I am
Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye
shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled:
for all these
things must come
to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise
against nation, and
kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences,
and earthquakes,
in divers places. All these are
the beginning of sorrows. Then shall
they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall
be hated
of all nations for my name's sake.
Earthquakes all over the place are prophesied to happen, and we know this is a future event because all nations do not yet hate Christians. At one time, Christians will be hated for who we are and our relationship to God.
Revelation 16:17-21
And
the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a
great
voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.
And there were voices, and thunders, and
lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men
were
upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.
And the great city was divided into three
parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in
remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the
fierceness
of his wrath. And every island fled away,
and the mountains were not found. And
there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the
weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the
hail;
for the plague thereof was exceeding great.
Over the past few years we have seen tsunamis that have taken much life and destroyed much property. Most recently, the tsunami in Japan showed how destructive these can be. Of recent note, was the tsunami in the Indian Ocean. And then there was the tsunami that hit American Samoa. Videos taken of these tsunamis appear to show the land fleeing from the water, even though we know that the water is overtaking the land. We haven't yet seen the heavy hail stones, but even moderate size hail stones can cause damage. A few years back in El Paso, a hail storm sat over my house for a few minutes. After the terror subsided, the insurance company gave me a new roof and new garage doors and a few other items. The hail was so intense it looked like golf balls inside a popcorn machine, and all of my skylights were broken. It alarmed me and it alarmed my parrot Baby, who exclaimed, "I don't want to die!" I have never heard baby use those word prior or since. The storm was intense. The end of all of these events is the return of Jesus and the establishment of the Kingdom of God.
Revelation 19:11-21
And
I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him
was
called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make
war. His
eyes were as a
flame of fire, and on his head were many
crowns;
and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
And he was clothed
with a vesture
dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And
the armies which
were in
heaven
followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that
with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod
of iron:
and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty
God. And he hath on his vesture
and on his
thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. And I
saw an angel standing in the sun; and he
cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst
of
heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the
great God;
That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the
flesh of
mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and
the
flesh of all men, both free
and bond, both small and great. And I saw the beast, and the
kings of the
earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that
sat on
the horse, and against his army. And the
beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles
before
him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the
beast, and
them that worshipped his image. These
both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
And the remnant were slain with the sword of
him that sat upon the horse, which sword
proceeded out of his mouth: and
all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
It's amazing how a volcano can remind me of these prophecies. This world and all that is in it was made by God who deserves the glory and honor.
