Jesus and the Comforting Power of the Holy Spirit
February 22, 2014

Last week I wrote about Jesus and the Power of God's Love. There are times in life when it is easy to feel the power of God's love, and then there are the difficult roadblocks which can cause us much doubt and grief. It is during this time that we can recall a promise made by Jesus to his disciples shortly before his death.

John 14:15-27
If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Jesus promised to send the comforting power of the Holy Spirit to those who keep His commandments. He promised not to leave us alone, and in times of doubt and grief it is easy to to feel all alone. We need to remember that when we keep the commandments of Jesus, we also keep the commandments of the Father, because the words that Jesus spoke were not His, but the Father's. In keeping the commandments, Jesus promised that the Father and He would come to us in these times and live with us. In times when we feel alone that we need to remember that Jesus and the Father are in our life. No matter what life throws at us, we are not to be troubled, nor are we to be afraid.

John 15:18-27
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me. If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloke for their sin. He that hateth me hateth my Father also. If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father. But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause. But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

Even when we might feel hated or persecuted we can take comfort in knowing that Jesus was hated and persecuted. In life, there will always be bumps in the road and unexpected challenges that might get us down. How we respond to these challenges is what will make the difference. If we keep the faith and endure to the end when our race comes to its end, perhaps the Father might echo words similar to what He said after the baptism of Jesus.

Matthew 3:13-17
Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Just as the Father was well pleased with Jesus, the Father is well pleased with us when we obey the commandments. We can take comfort in this as we live in a turbulent time when the bumps and roadblocks of life can through us for a loop. Most of all, we can take comfort knowing that Jesus and the Father are with us in our time of need. For those struggling with a difficult situation in life, you are not alone. Jesus and the Father are with you. Moving forward while facing a huge difficulty may seem like an insurmountable quest, but it is a quest we must take.
