Jesus and His Father
June 14, 2014
In the United States, the third Sunday of June is observed as Father's Day, and when Jesus came to earth he did the will of his Father, and in his ministry connected people to the Father.
John 12:44-50
Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me. I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
Jesus also showed that by doing the will of his Father and speaking what the Father wanted him to say he pleased the Father.
John 8:28-29
Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
Jesus gives each of us an admonition to be perfect as the Father is perfect; in essence we are to strive to be like our Father.
Matthew 5:48
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Father's Day is a day to honor our human father, and by using the teachings of Jesus we begin to see what is important to our Father, and what would be important for any father on earth. Children typically honor their father with gifts and while it is easy to buy a gift, perhaps the best give we can give is a life that validates the sacrifices made by our father; to be morally upright, happy, and successful in what we choose to do. Some fathers may say they have everything they need. When it comes to the gift of a morally upright, happy, and successful life; there is never enough of that and more of this never seems like a burden nor is it unwelcome. As we honor our fathers on earth, we can reflect on how Jesus honored his Father.
All verses are from the King James Version.
