Jesus and Teachings About Fleeing Evil
August 16, 2014

Last week we read verses about how Jesus despised when some use another person's spiritual relationship with God to make money and we ended with a well-known verse from 1 Timothy.

1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Most know verse ten from this chapter of 1 Timothy very well and never consider that it is followed by verses that provide additional information to consider.

1 Timothy 6:11-12
But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

Paul advised Timothy to flee the pursuit of money and instead to follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness. Similarly, Jesus taught that we should first seek the kingdom of God and righteousness.

Matthew 6:31-33
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles seek: for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Jesus taught that by prioritizing our spiritual relationship first, that God would take care of our physical needs. In a world surrounded by money and with the glitter that money can buy, we need to focus on our spiritual relationship with God first understanding that in doing so, God will provide for our needs.

All verses are from the King James Version.
