Jesus and His Message to the Church of the Laodiceans
November 1, 2014
For the past several weeks we have been reviewing the message of Jesus to the churches in Revelation, most recently looking at the message to the church at Philadelphia. We found that by remaining faithful and keeping ourselves pure with Jesus and God we preserve our place in eternity. Today, we are going to conclude our review of the message of Jesus to the churches in Revelation and today will consider his message to the only church that was linked to its members and not the city of their residence. Maybe this is significant because as we read the message we will see that the members of this church had a skewed perspective of their Christianity. We will find out that the Laodiceans had very high opinions of themselves when they should have been more objective and reflective in how they stood with Jesus and God.
Revelation 3:14-16
And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
The church at Laodicea was a lukewarm church. The only clue we have as to why they might have been lukewarm is in the introduction. This church wasn't the Church of God and it wasn't the Church of Jesus; this was a church of the members. In this church, the members were more important than God and Jesus; instead of worshiping God and Jesus, the members of this church somehow worshiped themselves. On top of this, they somehow managed to have a great deal of truth and because the church was more about the members instead of God and Jesus, this church was lukewarm. It was warm enough to attract members, yet not spiritually on fire to please God and Jesus.
Revelation 3:17-19
Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
The Laodiceans had a very high opinion of themselves. They saw themselves as having tremendous faith when the reality was quite different. They had a hard time understanding that they had very little faith and needed much spiritual growth. Jesus urged the Laodiceans to see themselves as they were and to repent.
Revelation 3:20-21
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Should we find ourselves as a Christian that worships ourself more than God, we need to repent. To all who are faithful, eternal life is a promise.
