Jesus and Pentecost
June 8, 2014

It was on that Last Great Day of the Feast of Tabernacles that Jesus talked about living water flowing from the belly of those who believed. This did cause some debate among those who heard him. Some thought he spoke like a prophet while others doubted that he could be the Messiah. By reading the account in John, we will learn the reason why Jesus used the example of living waters.

John 7:37-44
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified. Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet. Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee? Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? So there was a division among the people because of him. And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

The living waters that Jesus spoke of were symbolic of the Holy Spirit, and the reason the Holy Spirit was not yet given was because Jesus had not yet died for our sins. Jesus would have to explain to his disciples that his death was necessary in order for the Holy Spirit to be given.

John 14:25-31
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

The living water, the comforter, would come after Jesus had departed for the Father, and it was on the Day of Pentecost after the death of Jesus, that believers were filled with the Holy Spirit so that others could see.

Acts 2:1-4
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Holy Spirit is what marks us as being of God, and this gift comes to us through the sacrifice of Jesus so that all could live, and this gift was first given on Pentecost, one of God's Holy Days.
