Jesus Taught Us About Righteousness
May 31, 2014
Last week we learned that understanding can lead to an abundant life. Righteousness is an essential part of abundant living. Abundant living is not about how many physical things we have. It is about how much God is in our life, and the more we are righteous, the more God is in our life. Consider from the New Testament.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
What we have in the Bible is a textbook in righteous. Since the Bible is an important tool for us to use in our spiritual development, we must make use of its availability. For those who use smart phones or tablet devices, free Bible apps are available along with many paid apps. You can easily take the Word of God with you as you are on the go. The Bible is also profitable for doctrine and it is important to understand the source of doctrine.
2 John 1:7-9
For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
Mentioned last week, it is important to note that there are those who are so diligent in reading and studying the Bible that they forget that it is through Jesus and not the Bible that we have eternal life, and during his ministry on earth, Jesus encountered a rich person like this.
Matthew 19:16-22
And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.
The bigger concept being taught is it is more important to act on our knowledge than to only have knowledge, and to use our actions in a way that provide a benefit beyond just ourselves. When we obey the scriptures, we do benefit ourselves, and this process begins with recognizing that the Bible is a textbook we can use towards righteousness.
All verses are from the King James Version.
