Jesus and His Message to the Church at Smyrna
September 20, 2014

Last week we reviewed the message of Jesus to the Church at Ephesus. As the King of Kings, Jesus had a message to share with all of the churches in Revelation. Each message has similar thoughts, and yet each touches different issues. Today we will focus on the second message to the Church at Smyrna.

Revelation 2:8-9
And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, but thou art rich and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

The church at Smyrna was encompassed by their works, their tribulation and their poverty. With very little this church did much while under duress. It would have been convenient for this church to do very little because of their poverty, and instead they chose to do much. It would have been easy to abandon their work when faced with tribulation, and instead they continued in doing the work. They could have used their financial situation as a reason to scale back on what they were doing and instead they display rich and abundant faith and continued doing the work. In Smyrna there were many who had the appearance of righteousness and underneath were corrupt. Instead of becoming like those people, instead the church at Smyrna maintained focus on doing the work of God.

Revelation 2:10
Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

The church at Smyrna suffered much and members were harassed and tormented by Satan. Some were imprisoned and for punishment and some would die. The promise to those who endured to the end was the same promise given to the church at Ephesus, eternal life.

Revelation 2:11
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

With Jesus and God promises endure and all who are faithful till the end will be given eternal life. Some are given a long life and a long period of time to endure. Others are given a much shorter period of time, and some people have a short life span caused by evil or tragedy. To all it makes no difference; those who endure to the end will be saved.
