Jesus and His Message to the Church at Thyatira
October 11, 2014
On the Sabbath in the middle of the Feast of Tabernacles we are going to continue our review of the message of Jesus to the churches in Revelation and today will consider his message to the church that found intself in the middle of a bad situation. Sometimes bad situations happen becaues of reasons beyond our control; the church at Thyatira allowed the bad situation to happen. We will find out that like many bad situations, these can either be constructive or destructive, and all we need to do is read the first two verses of Jesus message to see what happened to the church at Thyatira.
Revelation 2:18-19
And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass; I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first.
The church at Thyatira embodied many of the great Christian characteristics. They had works, charity, and were service-oriented. They had patience, and they ended up much stronger than they started. It sounds pretty impressive, and as we read further we find that there were concerns at the church in Thyatira.
Revelation 2:20-23
Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
Their patience allowed evil practices associated with Jezebel to become part of them. Having patience is a wonderful and needed quality. Today, an extension of patience is tolerance. We live in a world that has different standards than what we have, and we must have patience and be tolerant of the practices and activities of others. We do not need to accept those practices as our practices, just like the church at Thyatira did not need to allow the teachings associated with Jezebel to be taught to its members; we do not need to secularize our religious beliefs to conform to the activities of this world. Just keeping the Feast of Tabernacles is proof positive that we are committed to being different, and just like we want to have the opportunity to celebrate the Holy Days, we must have patience with others as they celebrate their religious faith. Should we ever find ourselves surrounded by evil during our religious gatherings, the message to the church at Thyatira shows that to God and Jesus, the person needs to be right with God even if the organization is not.
Revelation 2:24-28
But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden. But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. And I will give him the morning star.
With Jesus and God promises endure and all who are faithful till the end will be given eternal life. When finding yourself surrounded by evil when you were expecting to find good, Jesus teaches to hold onto that which we already know is good; when this is done evil cannot overcome us and eventually we will overcome evil. To all it makes no difference; those who repent and those who endure to the end will be saved.
All verses are from the King James Version.
