Malachi Reveals the Future Elijah
August 8, 2015

Last week we continued our study of the Book of Malachi by examing how corrupt priests sway beleivers through emotion when they have nothing of substance to provide. Today Malachi reveals his final message of the future Elijah who will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to their fathers.

Malachi 4:1-3
For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

Malachi shows that a future day would come that would be too hot for the wicked to handle. The righteous will be delivered and will completely overpower the wicked.

Malachi 4:4
Remember ye the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.

Malachi admonishes us to remember the law of Moses with the statutes and judgments. We are not to ignore what is important to God or replace what is important to God with what we feel is important.

Malachi 4:5-6
Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse.

God reveals through Malachi that before the horrible end time, a prophet of God, Elijah will be sent by God whose ministry will turn the hearts of fathers to the children and the hearts of children to their fathers. A curse, utter destruction, will be the fate of earth if this does not happen. It looks like this Elijah will come when people will be lovers of themselves rather than others and that this strange love will be so pervasive that children will NOT be the pride of their father and will be missing the love of their fathers. This Elijah will reverse the trend by helping fathers care for and love their children, and the approach will be genuine, so that the children will understand and will be able to love their fathers. It is on this thought that the Old Testament ends and the ministry of Jesus begins.
