Independence Day
July 4, 2015

Today we will depart from our current study of the Book of Daniel. In the United States, July 4th is celebrated as Independence Day and for those of us who call the United States home, we equate independence with freedom. The Bible shows that truth is the agent that sets us free, and gives one of the reasons why public education has been so very important to this country.

John 8:31-36
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

The message of Jesus was to the children of Israel and to them he said the truth would make them free, and in this context he was signaling independence from the penalty of sin. Jesus would have the power to free people from the penalty of sin. Because the message of Jesus was to the children of Israel there were many comparisons given to the Old Testament. The author of the Book of Hebrews, illustrated how Jesus is our spiritual High Priest who intercedes on our behalf.

Hebrews 9:11-15
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Jesus redeemed us from the penalty of sin through his sacrifice and allows us to be part of the internal inheritance. Collectively his teachings are recorded in the gospels and letters that formed the New Testament and is one of the reasons why the words of the Bible speak truth.

John 17:17
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

As we celebrate Independence Day in the United States, we can rejoice that spiritually we have our independence through Jesus Christ.
