Last Day of Unleavened Bread
April 10, 2014
Today is the last day of the the Feast of Unleavened Bread, that is also referred to as the Feast of Passover. During this feast, we are to remove leavening and leavened bread from our homes, refrain from eating leavened bread while in the community, and instead eat unleavened bread. For Christians who observe, this feast is symbolic of our journey out of sin to the light of Christ's calling.
Galations 5:1-9
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
As a Christian we are free from the burden, or penalty, of the law. Of and by our lonely self, there is nothing we can do that can cause our own salvation. We can not allow a desire to be obedient to God to supercede this reality. Obedience of and by itself will not bring us to salvation; only faith in Jesus Christ can bring us to salvation, and in the end it is not what we do, but was Jesus does through us in love that results in salvation. Perhaps for those of us who as Christians observe this feast, coming out of sin needs to look more like faith in Jesus Christ rather than anything we do or do not do. The more we believe our own actions directly contribute to salvation, the more likely we are to be puffed up by our own deeds, totally missing the meaning of the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
Ephesians 4:17-24
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
The more we are puffed up in our own minds, the more we become like the gentiles who follow the lead of the vanity of their minds. The more we believe that salvation is directly caused by our own actions, the more likely we are to be separated from the grace of God through Jesus. We are to move beyond who we were with our former habits and become a new person created after the image of God through righteousness and true holiness; not the false peity that is displayed at church.
Colossians 3:8-17
But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
The new person does not give place to the common practices of mankind and is instead renewed through knowledge that reflects the values of God and Jesus. The new person displays extreme acts of kindness and never considers others to be less than they are. The new person is quick to forgive and embraces acts of love that benefit others. Most of all, whatever is done, the new person recognizes that all is done through thanks to and by the grace and blessing of Jesus Christ and God the Father.
