Feast of Trumpets
September 14, 2015

On Saturday, we finished our study of the Book of Jonah and saw that Jonah had much to learn about mercy. Today is one of the holy days as given by God thousands of years ago. Referred to by most as Rosh Hashanah, it is also referred to as the Feast of Trumpets, a memorial of the blowing of the trumpets, and is observed as a religious holiday by a small number of first-century apostolic Christians.

Leviticus 23:24-25
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

As a religious holiday, first-century apostolic Christians do not work on this day, and while we feel closely connected with our Jewish friends on these holy days, we recognize and respect the differences we have in the observance of holy days. Commonly explained as the Jewish new year and the start of the High Holy Days, Christians who observe this day see the prophetic return of Jesus Christ and triumph over death when the Kingdom of God will be established on earth.

1 Corinthians 15:51-58
Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Paul explained to the Corinthians that at the time of the last trumpet the resurrection would occur. It is this holy day that looks forward to the time when those who have died in Christ are resurrected and transformed into spirit. It is through Jesus that victory over death is achieved. First-century apostolic Christians pause on the Feast of Trumpets to look forward to this future wonderful time. We also recognize that at this future last trumpet, when Jesus returns, that it will be a time of Christian conquest.

Revelation 19:11-21
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

We see Jesus Christ as he who is called Faithful and True, and at the time of the last trumpet, what we as first-century apostolic Christians consider to be the fulfillment of the Feast of Trumpets, we acknowledge as the future establishment of the Kingdom of God on earth, and look forward to this time when those who have died in Christ are resurrected to immortality.
