Feast of Trumpets
October 3, 2016
Today is the Feast of Trumpets, and this is the holy day that is listed as a memorial of the blowing of trumpets. Trumpets would blare at time of alarm and often at war. In some ways, the Feast of Trumpets might compare to a nation's Memorial Day, where those who died in war are remembered, and yet it is different as it also looks forward.
Leviticus 23:24-25
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation. Ye shall do no servile work therein: but ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
In the old testament on this day and for most religious ceremonies, an offering by fire would be made to purify the celebrants before God. In the new testament, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ is the offering made once for all. For Christians, in addition to looking back on all who sacrificed for the truth, this day serves as a reminder of the promised resurrection and eternal life.
1 Corinthians 15:50-54
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
The Feast of Trumpets points forward to this future time when eternal life is given to God's children as part of the promised resurrection. Beyond the resurrection and eternal life, this day also points to the return of Jesus Christ at the time of the prophesied last trumpet when the Kingdom of God is established on earth.
Revelation 19:11-16
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
The Feast of Trumpets is a holy day that memorializes all who have sacrificed or died for the truth, it points forward to the future resurrection of those who have died in the faith, and it foretells the coming return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of the Kingdom of God.
