Fruit of the Spirit: Goodness
August 19, 2017
We are several weeks into a study of the fruit of the spirit listed by Paul in Galatians 5:22-23 and last week looked at gentleness. Today we will consider what follows gentleness, or kindess; goodness. Goodness is translated from the Greek word transliterated as agathosyne, and is given the number 19 by Strong's Biblical Concordance.
Paul wrote to the Romans how the Holy Spirit can lead one to goodness, and how goodness can be used as a tool by other fruits of the spirit.
Romans 15:13–14
Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.
Paul warned the Ephesians to not be deceived by vain words. He admonished them to walk in the light of the Holy Spirit as evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit including goodness.
Ephesians 5:6-11
Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth; Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
When Paul wrote to the Thessalonians a second time he reminded them that walking in our calling is one way to fulfill the goodness of God.
2 Thessalonians 1:11-12
Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power: That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Goodness, the Greek agathosyne, extends from gentleness, longsuffering, love, joy, and peace as a fruit of the holy spirit. As we live in God's love, joy, peace, longsuffering, and gentleness we can see the blessing of God's goodness in our life and have goodness to others. Next week, we will continue this study and will consider faith.
All verses are from the King James Version.
