Fruit of the Spirit: Peace
July 29, 2017
A few weeks ago we began a study of the fruit of the spirit listed by Paul in Galatians 5:22-23 and last week read about joy. We continue the study and this week consider peace. Peace is translated from the Greek word transliterated as eirene, and is given the number 1515 by Strong's Biblical Concordance. The name Irene is derived from eirene and also means peace.
Shortly before his death, Jesus told the disciples that in his absence, the comforter, the Holy Spirit, would be sent, and that the Holy Spirit would help the disciples remember what Jesus had taught them. Jesus also granted his disciples peace, a peace without troubles and without fear. This peace is translated from the transliterated eirene.
John 14:26-27
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
To contrast the peace, eirene, given to us through Jesus Christ, we are given the taking of peace through bloodshed in the prophecies of the Book of Revelation. In chapter six, John writes about the four horseman. It is the second horseman that takes peace, eirene, from the earth.
Revelation 6:1-4
And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword.
It is through faith in Jesus Christ, that we can have peace, eirene, with God.
Romans 5:1
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Peace, the Greek eirene, extends from love and joy as a fruit of the holy spirit. As we live in God's love and joy, we will have peace. Next week, we will continue this study and will consider longsuffering.
All verses are from the King James Version.
