Pentecost
June 4, 2017

Today is the day of Pentecost, a Holy Day that varies from May to June and for those who observe, Pentecost is another informal marker of the start of summer, much like Memorial Day is in the United States. Pentecost is the anniversary of the pouring of the Holy Spirit and is part of what Jesus was referring to when he spoke of the Comforter. Today many think of a comforter as bedding that is great to have on a very cold day; Jesus was referring to something else.

John 14:23-27
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The Comforter is the Holy Spirit and is given to those who love Jesus and God and demonstrate this by keeping the words of Jesus, and the words of Jesus are really the words of God the Father. The Holy Spirit should leave us at peace. No matter how bad things may be, no matter how scary the world may be, we should take peace through the gift of the Holy Spirit ,which was first given on the Day of Pentecost.

Acts 2:1-17
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

The gift that is given now to the faithful, the comforter, the Holy Spirit, will one day flow form the throne of God to all who thirst. Jesus also spoke of these living waters before his death on the Last Great Day of the Feast.

John 7:37-39
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.

Those who believe and follow the teachings of Jesus will be given the Holy Spirit, and through the Holy Spirit believers are a force of good on behalf of God in a troubled world.
