Proverbs Chapter Thirteen
February 18, 2017
This week we continue our study of the Book of Proverbs. There are many ways to look at the comparison between good and evil, the righteous and the wicked, the just and the unjust. Important for the younger generation is the ability to listen to what older people tell you. The fact that someone is older doesn't make them right, but the fact that they are older probably means they have more life experiences to draw from, and sometimes those life experiences make all the difference between success and failure. As we mature we better understand that it is not only what we say but how we say it. It is easy to be vulgar with the words we use; the more we offend others the more we are likely to bring harm to ourselves. Through life we learn that the more guarded we are with our words, the more stable our life will be. A big key in life is to move beyond desire and take action. Even a lazy person can dream of something, but the diligent make dreams come to reality. The more we base our dreams in what we value, the more likely we are to follow through and achieve success.
Proverbs 13:1-8
A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke. A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence. He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame. Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner. There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches. The ransom of a man's life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.
Throughout life, rejoice in what you have and realize that the wicked will lose what they have. Sometimes we have to wait a long time for good things to happen, and the wait can make us feel sick. When what we are waiting for finally comes, it can make us feel extremely happy. Always have a healthy respect for the law and be in awe of who God is and what he has done for us. This understanding will lead us in the path of life and keep us from death.
Proverbs 13:9-17
The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out. Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom. Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase. Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life. Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded. The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard. Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly. A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.
In life we will all meet people who will not listen; these people will have poverty. These people are fools who will not depart from evil. Hang out with fools and you will become a fool; hang out with wise people, and you will become wise. We need to be careful who we consider as friends, because we become like our friends. The wisest people pursue righteousness and leave an inheritance to their grandchildren.
Proverbs 13:18-25
Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured. The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil. He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed. A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just. Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment. He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.
Parents need to train their children in the way of righteousness and correct them when they stray; the righteous shall have want of nothing and the wicked will always want more.
