No Adultery
November 3, 2018
We have been looking at the ten commandments and how these apply in our life having most recently considered the commandment to not kill. It is through God and the creation we have been given life; only God would have the right to take what is given. The seventh commandment focuses on the sanctity of marriage through a commandment to not commit adultery. Adultery is the breaking of marriage through sexual infidelity. Sexual infidelity itself in marriage is adultery. In marriage we are to be faithful to our spouse without exception.
Exodus 20:14
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
In the Old Testament, adultery was punished by death; typically just the woman suffered this fate. During his earthly ministry, the scribes and pharisees brought to Jesus a woman caught in the very act of adultery and asked him if this woman should be stoned to death according to the teachings of the Old Testament. They were secretly hoping to trap Jesus. Instead of answering Jesus pretended to not hear them, and stooped down to write with his finger in the sand, ready to write. Jesus then suggested that the person without sin should be first to throw a stone. What Jesus wrote is not recorded for us, we just know it caused the accusers to quickly scatter. Jesus probably wrote the names of the men with details regarding their acts of adultery. When Jesus was finished writing, all that remained were the woman and Jesus. All of the accusers had left with no man left to condemn her. Jesus refused to condemn her telling her to leave and sin no more. Whether a hidden act or exposed for all to see, adultery is never right and must always be avoided.
John 8:1-11
Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
As Christians we are judged by not only our deeds but our thoughts. Jesus reminded the disciples that even looking at a person other than your spouse with a sexual desire has already committed adultery and clearly showed adultery applies to both men women.
Matthew 5:27-28
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
As Christians we are called in part to obey the ten commandments at this much higher spiritual standard taught by Jesus regarding adultery.
