The Feast of Trumpets
September 10, 2018
First-century apostolic Christians like me observe the Feast of Trumpets understanding this day foretells the return of Jesus Christ, and what a world Jesus Christ will return to. We believe this day is one of seven annual Holy Days to be observed. The world that Jesus will return to will not at the time of his return be a world of peace and it will not be a world of faith. We believe that the evil and corruption seen in society and government will be significantly worse than it is now, and that those who remain true to the faith will find the straight and narrow path becomes very rocky the nearer we come to the return of Jesus. Even Jesus pondered if he would find faith upon his return in one of the parables.
Luke 18:1-8
And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
Through the history of time, men have prayed to God for a variety of reasons, including to have their needs met. In this parable, Jesus gives the example of a widow who had been wronged by another person. The widow continuously asks a judge who knew nothing about God to help her. The sole reason the judge intervened was so he would not have to listen to the continuous concerns of this widow. Jesus then explained that God would avenge his own elect from all the wrongs committed against them, and then ended with a rhetorical question asking if he upon his return, would find faith on the earth. This parable shows that we are to bring our concerns about mistreatment to God, and to give God the opportunity to avenge wrongs committed against us. As we move closer to the return of Jesus, those wrongs will intensify.
Matthew 24:1-14
And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
Jesus explained that eventually, the temple buildings would cease to stand; and since the destruction of the temple by the Romans in 70 A.D. and to this day, this prophecy has been upheld. The thought of the temple not existing was so different and concerning to the disciples that one day while Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, they came to Jesus asking him to explain what the end of the world would look like. The very first thing that Jesus explained was to be careful that no man deceive you, because many would come in the name of Jesus. The only way I know to protect oneself from this possibility is to prove for yourself whatever is claimed to be of God, Jesus, and/or the Bible. Personality, knowledge, and logical presentations are not enough. Prove for yourself. It is only after proving for yourself while asking for guidance from God that you can be convinced in your own mind. Jesus mentioned wars and rumors of wars. He also mentioned disease, famine and earthquakes as just the beginning of sorrows. At first when the active persecution sets in, the intent will be to harass; this persecution will quickly intensify to result in death. Christians will be hated in all nations. There will be no God-fearing, Jesus-loving nations at this time. I believe these scriptures show there will be many nations deceived into believing they are God-fearing and Jesus-loving, but they are deceived because they do not have the truth. Loyalty will be a thing of the past as people will gladly betray and hate each other. Some people who see the developing unrest will use the circumstances to deceive the masses while enriching themselves. Sin and evil will increase and many will be hardened by the hardness of the world. Only those who endure to the end will be saved, and we know the end of the world will only happen after the gospel of the kingdom is preached to the world.
Revelation 19:11-21
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
When Jesus returns as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, it is with a heavenly army and the intent of bringing the nations of this world into submission. It is on the return of Jesus that the false prophet and beast are tossed into the the lake of fire where they are burned up. Death and destruction touches all people; the rich, the powerful, the working man, the person who is in debt. Those still alive at the return of Jesus and still in rebellion to Him are killed with the sword. So many people die on this future date, that an angel calls all of the birds to the supper of the great God. The Irish philosopher Edmund Burke said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." It is on this future date that through the action taken by Jesus and His angelic army, God avenges the evil that has perplexed and frustrated the elect of God. It is on this day, the Feast of Trumpets, that we are reminded that Jesus will one day return to establish his kingdom and will start by eliminating evil and avenging the wrongs committed against the elect.
