The Changing Climate of Our Time
June 22, 2019

Yesterday marked the start of summer and with the first full day of summer, the heat is on. For the past several decades there has been a debate on climate change with many more people believing man is the cause of climate change and fewer people believing climate change is part of the natural climate cycle. What cannot be debated are the measured and observed climatological changes. When we start considering the Bible, is there anything in the Bible which could point to climate change? I think there is. take for instance a passage from Revelation.

Revelation 16:8-9
And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

In this passage, people are scorched with great heat. Even though the present time is marked with record-breaking temperatures, the timing of this passage appears to be at a future time. Even though we talk about climate change and global warming, what we see today is nothing compared to what will happen in the future. The cause of this future global warming is also given; it is a punishment from God in response to something bad, or sin, that people do. Even given the extreme circumstances, people will not change. Yet even in this future time of extreme heat, the different seasons will continue; this is a promise from God after Noah's flood.

Genesis 8:21-22
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done. While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

Moving forward, what we are likely to see is extreme heat in the summer, extreme cold in the winter, and brutal times of spring and autumn as the climate adjusts between the extremes. Periods of turbulent weather will become more and more common unless mankind repents from our disobedience to God. God will hold true to his promise given after the flood while exacting this future punishment on mankind. The Bible shows the punishment is of God and that the earth is defiled, or polluted, by the people and a major reason WHY is given. The earth is defiled because the people have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Contrast this to the statement given by Jesus that He did NOT come to destroy the law but to fulfill. Everything Jesus taught is so that we might be perfect as our Father in Heaven is perfect.

Isaiah 24:5-12
The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh. The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it. The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in. There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone. In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.

There is still time for mankind to repent; yet I think mankind will choose to ignore the hand of God in climate change and will suffer the punishment of God.
