The Last Day of Unleavened Bread
April 26, 2019
A week ago, First Century Apostolic Christians like me found ourselves observing the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Today is the Last Day of Unleavened Bread in 2019. Revealed to mankind during the Exodus, The Feast of Unleavened Bread is a time to have removed leavened bread from one's home and to have no leavening agents in one's home. The first and last days are Holy Days, a time for no work and gathering together.
Leviticus 23:6-8
And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread. In the first day ye shall have an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD seven days: in the seventh day is an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein.
Historically, the Feast of Unleavened Bread is a time to reflect on the deliverance of the Children of Israel from Egypt. The Children of Israel were led out of Egypt by God with a strong hand and freed from their oppressors, the Egyptians.
Exodus 13:3-10
And Moses said unto the people, Remember this day, in which ye came out from Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place: there shall no leavened bread be eaten. This day came ye out in the month Abib. And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, that thou shalt keep this service in this month. Seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD. Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days; and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee, neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters. And thou shalt shew thy son in that day, saying, This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt. And it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that the LORD'S law may be in thy mouth: for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt. Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year.
With a strong hand, Jesus, we are led out of sin today. Jesus is our bread of life, and it is through Jesus that we have eternal life.
John 6:47-58
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
Today we keep the Last Day of Unleavened Bread, as Paul wrote, with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. We know that it is through the sacrifice of Jesus that we are now being led from the oppression and captivity of sin. Unlike the Children of Israel who wandered in the wilderness for forty years because they doubted and did not believe, through faith in Jesus, through the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth, we will escape sin and have eternal life.
