Is the Bible Relevant in Today’s World?
November 9, 2019

Last week we considered how we should never cheat God, how the Book of Malachi recorded many different examples of how people cheated God. People try to cheat God because they don't see the relevancy of God in their life. They think of the Bible as an ancient book or that God's way of life is outdated. The Bible remains a valid and modern book for us today because the principles contained in the Bible are timeless, they do not change as Jesus Christ does not change. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Hebrews 13:7-14
Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation. Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle. For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.

There is no amount of money we can give God, that we can give to a church, that we can give to a priest that will guarantee our salvation. Salvation is not something that can be bought with money. That’s simply a vain idea that has been around since the beginning of time. Mankind is corrupt, that will never go away. People will always see the opportunity in trying to bribe their way into a better tomorrow. Having money will not cause God to respect us. God looks at the heart of people to determine a person’s righteousness.

Genesis 1:1-2
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void;

The very first reference in the Bible to heaven, earth, and God is found in Genesis 1:1. Most people move on to verse two immediately without any consideration to any difference in time. When we take a look at verse two, we get some words and phrases which for those who study the Bible should give us caution. I Corinthians 14:33 tells us that God is not the author of confusion, yet verse two shows us the earth was in a confused state. The Hebrew words tohuw and bohuw are the words from which we have translated form and void in verse two, and these words can mean confusion. In the Biblical record of verse two we have the earth in a confused state. If God created the earth in a confused state, then God would be an author of confusion and 1 Corinthians 14:33 would be a lie!

From reading the Bible, we know there was a Satanic rebellion, and it was this Satanic rebellion that left the earth in a confused state; the earth and all the people living in it are still very much confused. Only those called by God are not confused today.

There’s wisdom we can gain from the Bible that is timeless, that was as practical when it was written thousands of years ago as it is today. One of the best examples of wisdom that we have in the Bible is how King Solomon handled what today would be called a child custody dispute. This timeless wisdom makes the Bible relevant in today’s world.

1 Kings 3:16-28
Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him. And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it. And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear. And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king. Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living. And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof. And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.

There are many different examples of why the Bible is relevant today. This Bible study has looked at a few, the sermon looks at additional examples. The Bible is a book that we can use to guide us as we decisions day in and day out, and we know that there is nothing in the modern or scientific record which would dispute what we would find in the Bible. God has given us an incredible opportunity at eternal life and salvation. It’s one we know we cannot take lightly, and gladly he has also given us his word in the written form, the Bible, which is a modern and relevant book that we can use as a tool through daily study and meditation and reflection to get to that future time of happiness in this Kingdom of God. And, we know that the Bible is useful for all things in helping us get to that future goal of salvation.
