The Road to Happiness
October 12, 2019
We are in the middle of the Christians Fall Holy Days, recently having observed the Christian Day of Atonement. Monday will start the the Feast of Tabernacles. As first-century apostolic Christians, we know these Holy Days are to be observed today through a Christian perspective. With the banishment of Satan and being made right with God symbolized through the Day of Atonement, we know there will be this future time of happiness. At the present moment, we are all on the road to happiness. In addition to this Bible study is a companion sermon available as an audio file and transcript. The sermon does go into greater depth than the study. The word happy and happiness may be found more infrequently in various translations of the Bible. Hebrew words such as the one tranliterated as Esher, and Greeek words, such as the one transliterated as Makarios are translated as blessed. These words could also be translated as happy. John 13:17 and 1 Peter 4:14 are examples in the King James Version of the Bible where Makarios is translated as happy. Happiness begins by focusing on God and His righteousness. The very first Psalm tells us that we are happy when we do not do what the ungodly do, but rather delight in the law of God.
Psalm 1:1-6
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
We know that by keeping the commandments of Jesus, as Jesus obeys the commandments of God, that our joy is full. Joy is cheerful happiness, happiness that bubbles over and oozes all over the place. Through obedience, by loving one another, we can have this joy.
John 15:9-17
As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater lvehath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. These things I command you, that ye love one another.
In speaking to a woman, Jesus made it very clear that being blessed, Makarios, being happy, comes by hearing and keeping the word of God. Again, it is through obedience we have this blessing in our life.
Luke 11:27-28
And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.
The road to happiness is a road of blessing, a toll road, that is paid through hearing and obedience to the word of God.
All verses are from the King James Version.
