What is Your Bow-Down Moment?
February 16, 2019
For the past two months, we have been looking at conspiracies of faith. Unlike conspiracies where credible evidence can be hard to find or non-existent, we found Biblical citations as the basis of our conspiracies as modern practice is far removed from the faith once delivered. To have knowledge of Biblical truth and to knowingly subvert that truth are the conspiracies we have looked at. Why a person would willingly subvert the truth so that the faith once delivered is a strange faith by modern standards is worthy of a conspiracy. It's fair to state up front, I really don't know the exact reason why. In some cases lack of knowledge may have been the cause; I also suspect it had something to do with this passage.
Matthew 4:1-11
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
Jesus had his bow-down moment with Satan. Satan took Jesus to a very tall mountain and showed him the glory of the kingdoms of men. Jesus was offered every single kingdom in all of their glory. He offered Jesus the deal to be a king of kings and lord of lords. With no arguing, reasoning, or debate whether Satan could actually deliver on the deal, Jesus quoted scripture to reply to Satan, and this caused Satan to depart. So what is your bow-down moment? Jesus survived his bow-down moment. The first man, Adam, did not.
Genesis 3:1-7
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
Jesus is known as the Son of God. Adam and Eve were created by God. Both had a personal relationship with God. Comparing the two passages, Jesus quoted scripture, the knowledge of God during his bow-down moment. Adam and Eve relied on reason, the knowledge of man, during their bow-dowm moment. In the end we know how this act of sin has led to the world we have today. Paul compared and contrasted Jesus to Adam in his first letter to the Corinthians.
1 Corinthians 15:45-49
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
As Christians, we need to remind ourselves that we can easily respond to our bow-down moments as Adam did, or we can choose to follow Jesus and the example he set. In life, and at various times during life, we will all have our bow-down moments. Over the next several weeks, we will look at different types of bow-down moments that we might face. Throughout my life having recently retired from public education, if only I would work on the Saturday and worship God on Sunday was repeated as a hint, a suggestion, to give up my strange religion so that I could have some greater position of responsibility in all of the glory of that position. Sometimes hearing these phrases about my so-called strange religion bothered me. In the end it was just Satan talking through these other people giving me a bow-down moment. We all know how the story ends. Jesus will return as King of kings and Lord of lords in a final blow to Satan having survived his bow-down moment. With whatever Satan tempts you, as you remain faithful to God, I believe that God will give you the opportunity to return in all of the glory God wants you to have, that Satan desperately tried to cheat you from, in your final blow to Satan.
