Jesus-The Early Years-Part One
March 7, 2020

In about a month it will be time for the spring Holy Days and our ability to observe these Holy Days as Christians stems from the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. With the life and sacrifice of Jesus Christ looming on us in the time of year we’re in with the spring Holy Days, it’s appropriate for us to consider the life of Jesus Christ here on earth. Today, we’ll be taking a look a look at Jesus in the early years, and the life of Jesus begins way before it’s recorded for us as a physical human being. The very first mention and instance of Jesus, the oldest possible verse in the entire Bible from a chronological standpoint is not in the Old Testament, it’s in the New Testament.

Many people can debate who the Word was, but verse fourteen shows that the Word that was in the very beginning with God, was made flesh and dwelt among us, and this could only mean that the Word was Jesus Christ, and that’s a phenomenal point of learning for many people who think they know the Bible. It is this same Word that is the Light that John was sent to bear witness of, and through Whom in verse three, all things were made, meaning the Word was present at the creation of the earth.

John 1:1-14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

After first visiting Elisabeth and her husband Zacharias, who would be the parents of John the Baptist, the archangel Gabriel visits Mary in Nazareth to tell her that she would give birth to a son, even though she never had sexual relations with a man, let alone her fiancée, Joseph. Mary questioned how this would happen, and Gabriel explained that through the Holy Spirit, Mary would become pregnant, and her son Jesus would be called the Son of God.

Luke 1:26-35
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Not only did the unexpected pregnancy cause concern for Mary, it troubled Joseph, because an unexpected pregnancy with no prior sexual relations normally means infidelity. It’s normal to feel troubled when your future spouse cheats on you and very few would fault a person for leaving a relationship due to infidelity. God was kind to Joseph and appeared to Joseph in a dream explaining that in fact the unborn child was a gift of the Holy Spirit who would be called Jesus, who would save people from their sins. This divine intervention comforted Joseph, and instead of sending Mary away, he married Mary.

Matthew 1:18-25
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

After Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph consummated their marriage, which directly contradicts the views of some that Mary remained a virgin throughout her life. We have only begun exploring the life of Jesus Christ in the early years and will continue this study next week.
