Led By The Holy Spirit
April 22, 2023

The Holy Spirit is the comforter promised to the disciples by Jesus before His death, and it is through the Holy Spirit that God works through people today, and today for the people of God there is no choice for us. We must be led by the Holy Spirit. It begins with trusting in God with all of our heart and leaning not on our own understanding while fearing God and departing from evil.

Proverbs 3:5-8
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

David, a man after God’s own heart, trusted in God and understood that there is no hiding from God or the Spirit of God. He knew that it made no difference where we find ourselves, that wherever we find ourselves, God is there. He knew God has power and might, and also knew that even though God is all powerful, God would lead him.

Psalm 139:7-10
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

Just like with David, today we recognize that wherever we find ourselves, God is there with power and might, and we also know that today, though His spirit, God will lead us. David lived long before the time of Jesus and prophets who also lived during Old Testament times also wrote of the Spirit of God. With Zechariah, he saw a vision of an angel who led him through a display of a golden candlestick having a bowl, seven lamps decorated with seven pipes, and two olive trees on either side of the bowl, and even though Zechariah saw these things in his dream, he did not know what these meant. The angel explained to Zechariah that what happens by God is not done through His might, nor is it done through His power. What God does is done through His Spirit.

Zechariah 4:1-6
And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord? Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

We think of God as all powerful and as never being without might, but what God does is done through the Spirit of God. On earth, when we think of a person who is all powerful and never without might, we probably envision a ruthless dictator who holds no mercy for the people who are ruled. God is not some ruthless dictator as mankind knows, because God does not work through power or might as a human dictator would, but instead works through God’s spirit. That spirit would descend upon Jesus like a dove, and it was Isaiah who was inspired by God to write the passage that Jesus would read as He started His earthly Ministry.

Isaiah 61:1-2
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

Ezekiel wrote of a new heart and new spirit that would be given to the people of Israel, how the Spirit of God would be given to the people so that they could do what God expected of them and receive the blessings that had been promised.

Ezekiel 36:26-28
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

Today as Christians, we are given the Holy Spirit, that Spirit of God that lives in each of us. Without the Holy Spirit we cannot claim to be Christian. With the Holy Spirit we have access to eternal life because of the righteousness that comes through the Holy Spirit. That very same Holy Spirit that raised up Jesus from the dead lives in us, and at the return of Jesus will also raise us up from the dead. Because we have been bought and paid for with the blood of Jesus, we have no obligation to live after the flesh, but to use the Holy Spirit to extinguish, to put away the deeds of the flesh. We must be led by the Holy Spirit. For us there is no option. The Holy Spirit does not lead us into fear but into a relationship with God where God is our Father Who is in Heaven. The Holy Spirit leads us into a relationship where we are the children of God, heirs of the promise, and joint heirs with Jesus knowing that any suffering we may have now will be transformed into a later glory.

Romans 8:9-17
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Even though the disciples were promised the comforter, the Holy Spirit, they didn’t yet understand this when they were with the risen Jesus before His ascension to heaven. They thought Jesus might be hanging around on earth to establish the Kingdom of God at that time, but Jesus explained that instead of knowing when the Kingdom of God would be established, that the Holy Spirit would be given to the people of God who would use that gift to spread the message of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God, the very same message of Jesus, around the world.

Acts 1:6-8
When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

It was only a short time before this that Jesus was observing the final Passover with His disciples, teaching them about the foot washing, and the symbols of broken bread and wine. Jesus told them that the Holy Spirit is sent in the name of Jesus to not only teach all things, but to help them remember what Jesus had taught them.

John 14:25-26
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

That Holy Spirit, that Spirit of truth, guides us into all truth and gives us a glimpse of what tomorrow holds for us. It is through the Holy Spirit that Jesus is glorified.

John 16:12-16
I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

Jesus compared the Holy Spirit to a good gift, and to a gift that must be asked for and sought after. He also shared that if we ask for the Holy Spirit, we will be given the Holy Spirit and that if we seek the Holy Spirit we will find it. Whatever obstacle that we think may be in our way, can be overcome as simply as knocking on a closed door to gain entrance. Just like a parent gives their children good gifts, we know that with God, nothing bad will come to us through the Holy Spirit, and that the blessings we receive through the Holy Spirit will be far greater than the blessing of any gift given to us by our parents or family.

Luke 11:9-13
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Through Jesus we have been given freedom from the penalty of sin. We no longer worry about death that is the result of sin. This freedom that we have been given could be used to selfishly satisfy ourselves, but we are called through love to serve one another, knowing that loving our neighbor as ourselves fulfills all the law. We are also warned to not use the freedom we have been given to implode our faith and the faith of others. We cannot use the liberty we have been given to consume each other. When we use the liberty we have been given to serve one another through love, we are walking in the Spirit, and when we walk in the Spirit we focus on those things which are spiritually minded, and not focused on those things of the flesh. It is when we are led by the Holy Spirit that we have no need to fear the penalty of sin that come through the works of the flesh. But when we are led by the Holy Spirit, we should see the result of the Holy Spirit, the fruit of the Spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and moderation.

Galatians 5:13-26
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.

We have been given the Holy Spirit, we live in the Spirit, and must be led by the Holy Spirit. What we believe is of and by God the Father through Jesus Christ. What we believe is not fiction but comes through people who lived with Jesus Christ, who not only witnessed His teachings but all of the miracles associated with Him. What we believe is not fiction and gives us greater confidence in understanding what will yet happen, and use that knowledge as an anchor in our faith knowing that it is through the Holy Spirit and not anything we or any other person does that gives us this awareness of what will come to pass.

2 Peter 1:16-21
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

It is with the understanding that the Holy Spirit is a gift given to us by God, that Timothy was reminded by Paul to stir up that gift, and to remember that the Holy Spirit does not lead us into fear, but leads us from a direction of power, love, and soundness of mind. With the Holy Spirit, there is no wavering back and forth in what we should do. Nor is there any sense of shame with the gift of the Holy Spirit, but know when faced with the Holy Spirit in us, some will reject that which we have and choose to make our life difficult. But also know that with this difficulty comes the hope of eternal life, all as we are led by the Holy Spirit.

2 Timothy 1:6-10
Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God; Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

As we are led by the Holy Spirit, we will live as if we are a living sacrifice and focus what we do on the result of being led by the Holy Spirit, the fruit of the spirit that Paul listed earlier for us in Galatians, love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and moderation. As we are led by the Holy Spirit, we will not be like other people in this world but will be transformed by the renewing of our mind proving what is good, acceptable, and perfect in the will of God.

Romans 12:1-2
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Having been given the gift of the Holy Spirit, we cannot also grieve the Holy Spirit, which seals us unto the return of Jesus Christ. Think about the children of Israel who when in Egypt used the blood of the Passover lamb to mark their doorways so the angel of death would pass over their house. The Holy Spirit is like a beacon which seals us until the return of Jesus Christ. We cannot do anything to diminish the value of this incredible gift we have been given and as we are led by the Holy Spirit we are to stop being bitter, wrathful, and angry, making accusations, and speaking evil of other people and instead are to be kind with each other, tenderhearted, and forgiving.

Ephesians 4:25-32
Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

Each of us who are of the faith have the same Holy Spirit. It is through that same Holy Spirit that we are baptized into the church without any special regard for who the person is other than they like us are heirs and joint heirs with Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:12-13 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

It is the Holy Spirit that allows us to understand the things of God. The Holy Spirit does not rely on the wisdom of mankind to impart spiritual understanding, and allows us to better understand spiritual principles as we compare spiritual things with spiritual things, and through the Holy Spirit as we are led by it, we have the mind of Jesus Christ, unlike those who do not have the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:9-16
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

The Holy Spirit was given to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and as we are led by the Holy Spirit we are no longer servants of God but children of God and an heir of God through Jesus Christ.

Galatians 4:1-7
Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father. Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

As we are led by the Holy Spirit, we are able to help others who are just being called in understanding spiritual principles. That happened with Philip who was told by an angel to travel to the Gaza desert where he came across the Ethiopian eunuch, and was led by the Holy Spirit to approach the man to explain a passage of scripture he was reading.

Acts 8:26-31
And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert. And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship, Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet. Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot. And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

In his travels, Paul was led by the Holy Spirit to abandon preaching where he had been preaching in what is today Turkey and instead travel to Macedonia, so that those people could also hear the message of the gospel.

Acts 16:6-10
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not. And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.

Paul very well knew that what was happening to his entourage was not some quirk of time and chance, but the workings of the Holy Spirit, and Paul yielded to the Holy Spirit and was led by it. Being led by the Holy Spirit, he didn’t worry about what might befall him in his travels, but knew that the Holy Spirit would lead him so that the message of the gospel could continue to be spread.

Acts 20:17-23
And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church. And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: Save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me.

Just like Paul, we cannot worry about what may befall us in the future. Jesus taught that even if we are on trial for our life or freedom for matters of faith to not worry about what we would say because when we are being tried because of our faith and its basis in the teachings of the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit will come to our defense and give us the best answer with which to respond.

Mark 13:9-11
But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them. And the gospel must first be published among all nations. But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.

Stephen found himself in one of those situations when face to face with the religious elites of his day, and through the Holy Spirit, he did not hold back showing how they were the murderers and betrayers of Jesus just like their fathers before them brought grief to the prophets of their time, and how all of that was done not in alignment with the teachings of God. Ultimately, they killed Stephen, but a person who was there that day hearing his testimony, was Saul, who would later become the Apostle Paul. Through our actions even in the worst of times for us, we may never know the impact we will have when we are led by the Holy Spirit, and in the case of this Saul who became Paul, a good portion of New Testament is through his letters.

Acts 7:51-60
Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers: Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it. When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul. And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

As we are led by the Holy Spirit, we are being led by the Spirit of God who is rich in mercy for us having given His son Jesus Christ so that many can be saved. Through Jesus Christ and as we are led by the Holy Spirit, we recognize we are called to do good works and walk in them.

Ephesians 2:4-10
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, by grace ye are saved; And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

It is through Jesus Christ that as we are led by the Holy Spirit, we are strengthened by the Holy Spirit. On the outside we might look like any other person, but spiritually we have this superpower called the Holy Spirit. We can’t ignore that gift and as we are led by it, whenever we use the Holy Spirit, like a muscle, the Holy Spirit becomes stronger to the point where Jesus is in our heart by faith as we are grounded by love fully understanding the love of Christ and knowledge of God the Father.

Ephesians 3:14-21
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Being led by the Holy Spirit, we know we have the Spirit of Truth. Those who do not have the Holy Spirit have the spirit of error. It is through the Holy Spirit that we overcome that spirit of error which emboldens the spirit of antichrist.

1 John 4:1-6
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

As we are led by the Holy Spirit, we will come to a place where what we have is summarized by joy, peace, and hope through belief, and all of this through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:8-13
Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people. And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust. Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

We have been given the Holy Spirit and for us there is no choice. We must also be led by the Holy Spirit focusing on the results in our life that the Holy Spirit will give us, the fruit of the spirit, love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and moderation. We will stay focused on those spiritual qualities extinguishing the works of the flesh in our life as we come to a place in our life where what we have is summarized by joy, peace, and hope through belief, and all through the power of the Holy Spirit.
