About Tom Laign
I am a retired public special educator who attended Ambassador University from 1983 through 1987 in Big Sandy and Pasadena. I completed teacher certification requirements through the Alternative Certification Program at the univeristy of Texas El Paso and in August of 1990 was employed by Socorro Independent School District and served as a classroom teacher for thirteen years at Socorro Middle School, Sanchez Middle School, and Americas High School before completing my career as Transition Services Coordinator for the district's Department of Special Education. In 2008, I was named Texas Special Educator of the Year by the Texas Council of Administrators of Special Education. During my time as Transition Services Coordinator, I served on the board of the Texas Division for Career Development and Transition, affiliated with the Council for Exceptional Children. After retiring in December 2017, I served on the board for The Arc of El Paso, a non-profit organization serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, recently stepping down from that position.
Sabbath Bible Study was started in 2010 as a personal reflection of my faith including my religious studies at Ambassador University with an initial focus of Bible studies and word searches. Sermons were added in the fall of 2017. I had been a member of the Worldwide Church of God which underwent massive doctrinal changes in the 1990s, and after a massive split within the church, with strong feelings on both sides of the religious debate, I knew I would never leave God or the truth, but I also knew I did not want to be part of either polarizing group that emerged from the split.
The studies, sermons, and word searches are solely authored by me, unless otherwise noted. I consider myself to be a member of the Biblical Church of God, as the church would be described in the Bible without any type of historic or modern religious influence. Within that early church there was a mission to preach the gospel, with Paul's mission to the Gentiles detailed not only in the Book of Acts but also in his many letters to the churches. The Bible studies, sermons, and word searches are made available for those who choose to visit this website. If you are willing to accept what is plainly written in the Bible, you will find Sabbath Bible Study useful to you on your spiritual journey. Believing that I am not to judge others so that I am not judged by God, any theological or societal views that I share that differ from yours are presented to share what is presented in the Bible without judgment. I fully understand some will visit this website and find agreement, and others will visit and find disagreement. To all who may believe differently, I also extend peace and love knowing that our Father Who is in Heaven will in the end sort out our differences. I respect your right to accept or reject what is presented and ask in return that no judgment be brought against me, as I am bringing no judgment to other people, groups, churches, and countries. Because I am not bringing judgment as part of my message, if you do feel the need to judge others, you probably won't like how I style Bible studies and sermons, and I wish you peace and love as well. I do believe in living peaceably with all people as much as is possible and encourage all people to read the Bible, to believe what is written in the Bible, and to live according to Biblical values as a Christian. The Bible is truth, the word of God, and even if you do not agree with the information I share and never visit this website again, there is value in reading the Bible for yourself, understanding what is written in the Bible, and living a life of Biblical values as a Christian. I have no desire or intent to agree or disagree with others, nor do I have any wish to flatter or offend in anything that is found on this website. I'm simply sharing information from the Bible knowing that the word of any man cannot replace the Word of God.
My favorite verse is James 1:27, "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." The Bible is a deep and complex book with so many twists and turns, that the simplicity of this verse serves as an anchor for me looking at the needs of the disenfranchised, the orphans and widows, while keeping oneself from being polluted by the ways of this world. The world in which we live is a world of good and evil, and has been that way since the Garden of Eden and as people we tend to identify good as the opposite of evil and evil as the opposite of good. Adam and Eve were told not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and yet also chose not to eat of the tree of life. With the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we have all been given that opportunity rejected by Adam an Eve. Through Jesus Christ we have a way of life that leads to righteousness and our place in the Kingdom of God. Chances are none who read this think of themselves as living in a Garden of Eden, but we all have a choice between the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and the tree of life, and we must choose that tree of life, committing ourselves to righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ and for me what is beautifully summarized in James 1:27.
I am grateful to live in the United States of America, in the state of Texas and in the City of El Paso. With relatives across the United States and even in Europe, and having been raised as an Army brat, I have visited many wonderful places and met so many different people. All people can have the hope of eternal life that is given to followers of Jesus Christ, if they also choose to live according to Biblical values as a Christian. God-willing the sermons and Bible studies will be produced for many years to come. While some may be focused on prophecies, I like to be focused on what I need to be doing during the present moment as a Christian.
Sincerely, your brother in Christ,
Tom Laign
