Jesus and his Mother Mary
May 10, 2014
Last week we learned that when God is for us nobody can really be against us. Most of us experience this type of love from our parents. I wish everyone could experience this type of love. Jesus was raised by his loving parents, Mary and Joseph, and with Mother's Day celebrated today in Mexico and on Sunday in the United States, we can take time to consider Mary and the role she had in the life of Jesus.
Matthew 1:18-25
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
God could have chosen any method to bring Jesus into this world. He chose to have Jesus born the child of Mary. Some venerate Mary for this reason; most who consider themselves apostolic first-century Christians generally do not have this practice. We tend to see Mary as a special lady who was chosen by God to give birth to the Messiah without need for veneration. Mary became pregnant and was found to have a child whose father was the Holy Spirit. Humanly we don't understand how that can be; we must take the birth of Jesus through faith. The gospel of Luke provides additional details about Mary.
Luke 1:26-35
And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Through Luke, we understand that Mary was blessed among women and had found favor with God, and this gives us insight into Mary's character. She was a person who live a life of obedience to God's law. In everything Mary did, she trusted God instead of her own insight, and used her trust to depart from evil. Those who do this find favor with God and with man, and we know Mary had found favor with God.
Proverbs 3:1-12
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
Honoring our mother is part of the first commandment with promise and directly ties into keeping the commandments of God. On this Mother's Day, take time to honor your mother and remember that even Jesus had a mother whom he needed to honor.
All verses are from the King James Version.
