Jesus and His Teachings About Being Unspotted From This World
March 15, 2014
Last week I wrote Jesus and His Teachings About Being Alone. It is when we interact with others that we run the risk of being corrupt by the world we live in. That is why one of the statement of beliefs have is the need to keep oneself unspotted from the evils of the world. This is part of the pure religion taught by James in his epistle; we know this comes from Jesus and was taught in the beatitudes.
Matthew 5:38-48
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Jesus knew that thoughts of revenge are a normal part of the way the human mind is wired, and he wanted us to transcend the human experience. Attitudes of forgiveness to those who have wronged us, generosity to those who have taken from us, and loving those who hate us are far removed from what our brains are wired for, and yet these attitudes are so important. Being able to forgive when we are wronged means another person's act of evil does not become our own. Being generous to those who have taken from us means another person's act of evil does not become our own. Loving those who hate us means their evil stays with them as we are filled with the seed of God's love. The pathway to spiritual perfection, the pure religion spoken of by James, begins by understanding the acts of evil we endure each day and purposefully choosing to replace those acts in our life with acts of good.
Matthew 12:31-37
Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit. O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Jesus knew that those who were good in heart would have good works and those who were of an evil heart would have evil works. Jesus added more to his teachings by showing the importance of word choice. Sometimes our words betray us as our language does not match our deeds. Foul language will cause others to question our good deeds, and the best and most polite language will never fully compensate for an evil deed.
John 3:20
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
Those who practice evil live in darkness and where they live they can't even see themselves. It is sort of like lying to yourself. You might make yourself feel better and nothing has changed. That is the distorted reality of those who have been spotted from this world and they want to stay in the darkness so they never have to worry about change. The truth is if we love Jesus and the Father, we will live a life that is unspotted from this world and the more we choose to forgive when others would condemn, the more we remain unspotted.
