Jesus and His Teachings About Being Alone
March 8, 2014

Last week I wrote Proverbs about Hard Work.  Sometimes hard work is a useful strategy to get us through difficult times. We dive into the work needing to get done and are focused solely on that. It makes it easy to forget about other issues that we might have. Some have difficult times in their lives partly because they feel alone and they have no one else to share their concerns with. The comforting power of the Holy Spirit can get us through these times. Many times it is just easier to have a person to talk with to share concerns.

Matthew 6:25-34
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Jesus wants us to know that we are never alone when it comes to God's understanding of our needs. When we are in pain because of the stress of life, God knows that. When we have sorrow in our life, God knows that, too. When we worry about the future, God knows that and he knows what our needs will be. If today is a rough day for us, God wants us to know that tomorrow is a different day. As Christians, our actions begin with faith, and our faith moves into action. We will do something with that belief. Last week we looked at several scriptures from Proverbs, and there is a relevant scripture for our topic.

Proverbs 27:10
Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

It is easy to forsake a friend when they are in trouble. During times when friends may be in trouble is when it is easiest to forget about them. It's convenient and it may make us feel safe. That's why Peter denied Jesus three times. Jesus deserved better and our friends, if they are really our friends, deserve better, too.

Proverbs 18:24
A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

If we want friends in life who will be there for us, we must first be willing to be a friend who will be there for them. If we want friends who will support us when family gives up on us, we have to be that friend who doesn't give up on our friends. In life, there may be times when we feel alone. When we do, we know that as long as we first seek the Kingdom of God and God's righteousness, that God will provide for us. We also must be willing to be a friend and when others give up on our friend, we must not give up on our friend. Not giving up on our friend doesn't mean we condone bad habits or risqué behavior. It also doesn't mean that we allow our friend to continue or we participate in these. It may mean for some friends we may need to distance ourselves if habits and behaviors are too dangerous for our own safety. Friends are an important part of life, and help us to avoid feeling alone. As we are a friend who does not give up on our friends, we begin to understand the commitment that Jesus and the Father have for us.
