Conspiracies of Faith: The Gospel
December 29, 2018
For the past several weeks, we have been studying conspiracies of faith and how these conspiracies have not only clouded the understanding of the faithful, but have also had consequences on believers. Pedophilia, is a long-lasting conspiracy of faith we recently studied. Another conspiracy that exists in today's world is a belief about the gospel that differs from what is taught in the Bible. Even a subtle twist in teaching can have a profound impact on your understanding of the Bible and relationship to both Jesus and God. Today we will learn that the gospel is the good news about Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God. What most overlook is that two different individuals were used to preach these gospels. It was John the Baptist who preached the gospel, or good news, of Jesus Christ. It was John the Baptist who taught that through Jesus would come baptism of the Holy Spirit that would lead to the remission of sins. It was after John the Baptist was put in prison that Jesus preached the gospel, the good news, of the Kingdom of God.
Mark 1:1-15
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins. And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey; And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose. I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness. And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him. Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
In some passages, the kingdom of God is referred to as the kingdom of heaven. Soon after preaching the gospel of the kingdom, Jesus began identifying his disciples. To connect with the common person, Jesus healed all who were physically or mentally ill. This caused the fame of Jesus to grow.
Matthew 4:17-25
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him. And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
We may think that only the gospel of the Kingdom of God is to be preached; Paul shows we are not to be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The good news that is shared with non-believers and those who lack an understanding of the Bible is that the good news is Jesus died for the sins of all so there may be a remission of sins. Once a person understands this foundational concept, the good news they must also understand is that there is good news about the Kingdom of God. Studies about the Feast of Tabernacles and the Last Great Day show more about the Kingdom of God and how one day God will dwell on earth with man.
Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek
To the unbeliever and those just learning the faith, the gospel will focus on the good news that Jesus died for our sins. For those with that knowledge, the gospel is the good news of the Kingdom of God, and the Bible shows that this kingdom will be on earth.
