Conspiracies of Faith: Did Jesus Come to Undo what God had Done?
December 15, 2018
We have begun a conversation about conspiracies of faith, and how these conspiracies oppress people, and learned that God is against all who oppress. There are some who teach regarding the old testament that all is done away as Jesus has come. That is what they teach, but what does the Bible say? The old testament ends with the book of Malachi recording in part, "...I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me..." What is so wrong about this thought that it would need to be overturned by Jesus? Jesus instead taught that his followers are the light of the world and that the good that they do being led by the Holy Spirit cannot be hid. We are to openly do good works so that God, our Father in Heaven, may be glorified. Jesus then went on to add that until heaven and earth pass, the very end of time as we know it, nothing changes in the law and that anyone who teaches otherwise will be the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. To enter the Kingdom of Heaven, we need to be more righteous than the scribes and Pharisees.
Matthew 5:14-20
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus rather than doing away with God's law put it underneath a microscope. He went on to explain that the thought of bringing harm to another was of equal consequence to the act of killing. Jesus laid down the expectation that we take time to be reconciled to others lest harm come our way. He went on to explain that adultery is no longer the result of a physical act of sex, but a spiritual perversion of lust. In a society where we might swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, Jesus instead tells us to take no oaths but to simply let our yes be yes and our no be no. Beyond that Jesus taught to not retaliate and to love our enemies, to bless those who curse us, to do good to those who hate us, to pray for those who use and persecute us.
Matthew 5:21-48
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Those who teach the old testament is done away are missing the concept, because they contradict what Jesus taught in Matthew 5. Jesus did not teach to do away with the law but to fulfill it by looking at it through a spiritual rather than physical lens. The war against every evil that faces mankind is not fought on the battle field, but in the hearts and minds of those who belong to Jesus and who are led by the Spirit of God. We fight a spiritual not a physical warfare against our enemy the devil; yet the conspiracy of faith as presented and believed by most everyone is that there is no battle to fight because the law was done away, and when sin is allowed to abound, the people are oppressed. Instead we are to realize that it is through Jesus we access the Father and continue in the Father's love as Jesus has made all things of the Father known to us, and Jesus called us to bear eternal, everlasting fruit.
John 15:9-17
As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. These things I command you, that ye love one another.
The simple command that Jesus had for us is this, to love one another, to be that light than shines brightly in the darkness that cannot be hid, to be known for our good works towards others. This may not be the ten commandments from the old testament; this is the fulfillment of the ten commandments. Any conspiracy of faith that suggests the ten commandments are no more cannot want us to be that bright light in the darkness and to love one another.
