Do Not Steal
November 10, 2018
We have seen how the first four of the ten commandments focused our attention on how to respect and fear God, and how the last six show us how to love our neighbors as ourself, most recently looking at adultery. Today we consdier the perils of theft. Under no circumstances can we steal and be right with God. The commandment from God is simple.
Exodus 20:15
Thou shalt not steal.
Even though the commandment is to not steal, many people will have some level of mercy on the thief who steals when that person is desparate to have their needs met. Even so, people who take are expected to pay back much more than they have taken.
Proverbs 6:30-31
Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry; But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
Instead of stealing to satisfy personal needs, Paul admonishes us to work productively so that we not only meet our needs, but will have extra to provide for others.
Ephesians 4:28
Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
As Christians we are again reminded to consider those in need, and when we consider the needs of others to be greater that our own needs, we are much ore likely to act in a manner acceptable to God.
All verses are from the King James Version.
