The Eighth Day-The Last Great Day
October 21, 2019
On a Monday starting the third week in October, most people are off to work. We are observing The Eighth Day, the Last Great Day, a Christian observance that looks forward to a new heaven and a new earth with the estabishment of New Jerusalem as the throne of God and Jesus. Grouped together with The Feast of Tabernacles, this feast extends the time of happiness foreshadowed by the Feast of Tabernacles. In addtion to this Bible study is a companion sermon available as an audio file and transcript. It was on the last day, the great day of the feast, that Jesus talked about rivers of living water.
John 7:37-39
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
Jesus gave us this wonderful symbolism of the rivers of living water that will flow out of bellies, and Jesus Christ was talking about the Holy Spirit. It is through the Holy Spirit within us that we are able to do good works here on planet earth. As we look forward to this future new heaven and new earth, we cannot think that God is delaying the return of Jesus Christ. This will happen when the time is perfect for God, when God will be able to maximize the number of people who will come to repentance. Peter wrote about these concepts in his second epistle.
2 Peter 3:8-18
But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
The rivers of living water will when the new heaven and new earth are established, flow from New Jerusalem as a river that is lined by the tree of life. Not since the Garden of Eden will the tree of life be accessible to so many.
Revelation 22:1-5
And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
With the Eighth Day, The Last Great Day of the Feast coming to an end, we come to the end of our study this year on God’s plan of salvation. Each and every day as we live our life, we have this incredible responsibility to make our calling and election sure before God. We see this incredible vision of this time of happiness, and as we live our life in the present world that is filled with evil, we can take comfort in this future time of happiness. We can use this future time as inspiration for us to serve God so that in the future, when it is God’s time to call all of mankind, that they are able to consider the example that we had and accept the calling of God.
